Jake Gyllenhaal Named Manhattan Theatre Club’s Spring Gala Honoree (Exclusive)

Jake Gyllenhaal will be honored at Manhattan Theatre Club’s spring gala.

Currently, Jake Gyllenhaal is playing Iago on Broadway in the play “Othello,” opposite Denzel Washington. He first appeared on Broadway back in 2015 for MTC’s production of Nick Payne’s “Constellations,” where he starred alongside Ruth Wilson. Since then, he has also been seen on Broadway in the revival of “Sunday in the Park with George” in 2017 and in the 2019 productions of “Sea Wall/A Life.

Apart from his acting roles, he was part of the Management Team Company’s Board of Directors between 2015 and 2023, and he actively supported their initiatives aimed at nurturing young talents in theatre.

The grand event, the gala, is set for May 19th at Cipriani in Manhattan. Notably, Bernadette Peters, who’s currently starring in Old Friends at the MTC’s Samuel J. Friedman Theatre, will be our host for the evening. Additionally, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation will receive recognition during this event.

The money collected during the gala is earmarked for Manhattan Theatre Club, a charitable theater organization based on Broadway, known for its recent productions like “Eureka Day” and serving as a producer for “The Hills of California” in the current season.

Performers from the productions of “Dead Outlaw”, “Maybe Happy Ending”, “Operation Mincemeat”, “Stephen Sondheim’s Old Friends”, and “Sunset Boulevard” have been arranged to take the stage at the upcoming gala event.

The co-chairs for the MTC Spring Gala are Marie Gallagher, Hirofumi Otsuka, Thomas Secunda, and Nigel Smith.

The Host Committee will consist of Opal H. Bennett, Mary Ann Giffuni (and her husband Vincent Q. Giffuni), Joanna Gleason, Andy Hartman, Jessica Hecht, Laurie B. and David C. Hodgson as a pair, Clyde B. Jones III, Lea Salonga, and the duo Laura Weil and EJ Camp.

Tony Award winner Jason Michael Webb will be the musical director for the gala.
