James Cameron eagerly anticipates the new phase in his life as a New Zealand resident, particularly following Donald Trump’s re-election for another term as U.S. President.
The Academy Award-winning director was recently queried on the podcast “Stuff’s The Unfiltered News” regarding a potential second term for President Trump. In response, he expressed his dismay, saying, “I find it utterly terrifying.
James Cameron, a Canadian-born director who has lived in New Zealand for the last 14 years, has no intention of moving back to the United States, largely because of the president’s contentious policies. Nevertheless, he must travel to Hollywood periodically due to professional obligations.
Cameron expressed concern about America moving away from its moral principles,” he stated. “If America no longer upholds what it once stood for, it loses its significance. It’s being drained of its essence, and I believe they’re doing this at an alarming pace for their own advantage.
When asked if he feels safer in New Zealand, the director of The Terminator expressed some uncertainty, stating that everyone worldwide shares the consequences of Trump’s policies, since we are all interconnected globally. It’s certainly advantageous to live in a distant land where one isn’t bombarded with daily news about the president.
Cameron expressed that while he’s unsure about feeling safer in this place, he appreciates not having to read about the disturbing events daily as headline news. He added that it’s disheartening, and he wishes the New Zealand media would relegate such stories to page three instead of constantly featuring them on the front page. Comparing it to a distressing event, Cameron mentioned that it feels like being forced to watch a car accident repeatedly in other places, as the perpetrator’s image is everywhere in the newspapers.
The filmmaker mentioned that he’s on the verge of becoming a New Zealander, which is “a goal I’ve been striving for, something I’ve had to make sacrifices for.
He stated that if you choose to relocate and establish a new home, it’s essential to put effort into integrating, participating, and building a reputation there. In his opinion, one should work hard to deserve the privilege of belonging in a particular location.
Ever since President Trump took office a month ago, his policies have been under intense scrutiny due to their contentious nature. These include executive orders related to immigration, climate change, diversity programs within the federal sector, and transgender rights, among others. Additionally, the unofficial Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), headed by Elon Musk, has faced criticism as it works to reduce government agencies and jobs in an attempt to decrease spending.
