James Franco Surfaces in Rome for ‘Hey Joe’ Premiere, Says Film Encourages “There’s Always a Way to Change Your Life”

As a seasoned gamer who has witnessed the rise and fall of countless Hollywood stars, I must admit that James Franco‘s journey is one that piques my curiosity. His latest role in “Hey Joe” seems to echo his own life experiences, which is quite intriguing from an observer’s perspective.

On a Friday in Rome, I found myself standing before the press to delve into my latest project, the captivating film titled “Hey Joe.” This movie held its grand debut at the Rome Film Festival. During our conversation about this moving piece, where I portray a WWII veteran revisiting Naples after discovering he has a son there after 25 years, I couldn’t help but draw some striking similarities between my character’s journey and aspects of my own life.

Franco remarked, “My character is a man who squandered his own existence.” He seized the moment to do something constructive. This resonated with me personally as well. I shifted my perspective on life. I recognized that true fulfillment from success lay in forming genuine connections with others and personal growth – aspects that would give purpose to my life.

Back in 2018, five women publicly accused James Franco of inappropriate sexual behavior. A collective lawsuit was filed in Los Angeles the following year, accusing him of exploiting his position by offering acting roles in return for personal favors. Then, in 2021, Franco agreed to pay a total of $2.2 million as part of a settlement regarding a class action lawsuit that claimed he pressured students at his Studio 4 Film School into performing sexually explicit scenes on camera.

After that point, Franco has largely stayed out of the spotlight, making appearances in the restricted screening of the 2019 film Zeroville, which he had directed back in 2014. Moreover, he was present at the Cannes Film Festival in May, where he was seen mingling in the exclusive section of a Nespresso gathering.

Franco portrayed his character in “Hey Joe” as a man whose life appears to be crumbling, yet possessing the ability to transform. “My character wrecked his own personal life,” he explained. “His marriage lies in ruins, he is isolated, sliding into alcoholism. But then, fortune favors him. Some might say ‘it’s too late.’ Others – like him – may see it as a chance, a path to explore. Life always offers opportunities for change.

The actor also discussed the differences between filmmaking in Hollywood and in Italy.

Claudio creates films in a unique manner that draws inspiration from Italian neo-realism, according to Franco. Instead of employing numerous angles as is common in American movies, Claudio primarily used just two perspectives. To give the film a personal feel and focus on my character, he opted for either shots over my shoulder or close-ups of my face throughout each scene.

Hey Joe, directed by Claudio Giovannesi, is set for theatrical release in Italy on Nov. 28, 2024.
