James Gunn Confirms DCU Won’t Retell Batman & Superman’s Origin Stories

As a movie enthusiast who has spent countless hours immersed in the vibrant world of superheroes and comic book adaptations, I must say that James Gunn‘s approach to DCU is nothing short of refreshing. Coming from someone who has witnessed the ups and downs of various cinematic universes, it’s heartening to see a new perspective being introduced.

Celebrate, fans of superheroes, as James Gunn’s DCU won’t repeat the errors made by previous Batman and Superman films. The fresh start for the cinematic universe will bring these legendary characters back to the big screen with new tales and actors portraying them, following the DCEU’s struggle to find its footing. While projects such as “Superman” will introduce a completely new take on the superhero, don’t anticipate Gunn retelling either hero’s origin stories in the near future.

As a devoted movie enthusiast, I recently found myself at Threads, engaging in a conversation with a fellow fan who voiced displeasure about the DC Universe opting against retelling origin stories for its flagship heroes like Batman and Superman. This fan also seemed to take issue with the focus on lesser-known characters such as Sgt. Rock and Swamp Thing, labeling them niche. However, in a thoughtful response, the co-CEO of DC Studios clarified that they have no plans to revisit the origins of Batman or Superman, acknowledging their established status. Moreover, they emphasized that iconic characters like Swamp Thing, contrary to being niche, deserve their moment in the spotlight as well. I’d wager that most DC fans would echo my sentiment: we appreciate the nuanced approach taken by the studio, understanding the importance of recognizing both the legendary and the emerging heroes within the universe.

“I won’t retell Batman and Superman’s origin tales since they’re already widely known. Also, please don’t relegate Swamp Thing to the sidelines. He’s a character we’ve publicly acknowledged as being in development, and he belongs to an exclusive group of DC characters with iconic comics, successful films, and television shows.

Even though their original tales are cherished for good reason, the popularity of these stories raises a question about the necessity of live-action movies repeating them. For instance, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice reimagined the widely recognized Martha and Thomas Wayne death scene, which was met with mixed reactions (to be fair, it was one of the least contentious aspects of the film). In contrast, Matt Reeves’ The Batman chose to concentrate on Bruce Wayne during his second year as a vigilante, opting not to retell his origin story and receiving praise. Lastly, Superman and Lois demonstrated that it’s possible to present Kal-El’s journey without going into the minute details before he donned the famous suit.

DCU is Already Off to a Good Start

As a movie enthusiast eagerly anticipating the future of DC Universe, I’m confident that James Gunn’s vision will set the stage for an engaging journey. Kicking off this new era is the intriguing project, Creature Commandos, followed closely by the much-awaited big screen debut of Superman featuring David Corenswet.

As DCU enthusiasts anxiously anticipate further updates on their lineup, a trailer for the new Superman movie is expected to drop earlier than anticipated. Recent rumors suggest this sneak peek will be unveiled in cinemas and online around mid-December, months before its scheduled summer 2025 premiere. Many believe it won’t reveal much footage, following a similar strategy as WB with the initial Barbie teaser. However, early buzz suggests we’re in store for something extraordinary.
