As a long-time fan of James Gunn‘s work, I can confidently say that his unique approach to storytelling and music is unparalleled in the world of superhero films. From the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise to The Suicide Squad, he has consistently shown an impressive ability to weave iconic songs into the fabric of his narratives, creating a soundtrack that resonates with audiences long after the credits roll.
Similar to how a big-budget superhero film generates buzz online with whispers and speculation, the production of James Gunn‘s upcoming Superman movie has been no exception. Although several intriguing queries from fans will likely remain unanswered until the movie hits theaters in 2025, the director has recently addressed one particularly peculiar rumor. It’s not unusual for directors to play music on set to help set the mood for a scene or just for some light-hearted fun during breaks.
I’ve always been fascinated by how James Gunn’s films are famed for their spectacular soundtracks and memorable use of music, often referred to as “needle-drop” moments. This has led some spectators to speculate that the director has a soft spot for music. Yet, it surprises me to see certain fans believe that the set of Superman was filled with the tunes from the late ’90s, which seems rather unusual to assume.
The renowned director of superheroes, addressing a discussion on Threads, dismissed a speculation about an impending video game inspired by Matt Reeves’ “The Batman”. Additionally, during this chat, he also put to rest a peculiar rumor concerning the filming of “Superman”; it was said that the set played the 1997 hit song “Tubthumping” by Chumbawamba.
Consequently, certain enthusiasts speculate that the track might be incorporated into the soundtrack for Superman. However, the director flat-out dismissed this speculation, expressing his astonishment at the notion that it could have any foundation. In a social media post, he stated, “I can’t believe fans thought it was even possible!”
“It’s not true that the song ‘Tubthumping’ by Chumbawamba was ever played during the filming of Superman. This is actually a rumor I received from Reddit.”
James Gunn’s Superman Score Will Be Different From Previous Entries
Apart from transforming an obscure comic book group, the Guardians of the Galaxy, into one of Marvel Studio’s top-grossing franchises, James Gunn also acquainted younger generations with a catalog of popular tunes spanning various past decades.
Each Guardians film explores a different musical epoch, starting with the ’60s and ’70s in the initial movie, progressing through to the ’90s and early 2000s in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. James Gunn’s venture into the DC Extended Universe, The Suicide Squad, incorporated similar music references, such as songs by The Pixies, Johnny Cash, The Fratellis, and Louis Prima. This has led some viewers to speculate that the director will carry his knack for weaving amazing soundtracks into his films to the upcoming Superman remake.
To date, Gunn hasn’t spoken out about whether popular songs may be included in this upcoming film. With Superman set to hit theaters next July, fans have been brainstorming their own imagined soundtracks for the movie. However, it remains uncertain if the film will include a soundtrack filled with well-known hits or not (or perhaps no Chumbawamba). Yet, the director has previously discussed the movie’s background music.
In a prior discussion on Reddit’s r/DC_Cinematic forum, director Gunn mentioned that he has been diligently composing the soundtrack for Superman, and this fresh melody will steer the film into uncharted territories compared to previous Superman movies. To put it simply, Gunn shared that the new music will lead the movie down a different path from its predecessors.
“I have more than an idea, we are, as usual, already developing score, and taking a unique path.”
