I regret to inform DC fans, but it appears that the speculation about Garret Dillahunt portraying a popular archer character within the DC Universe on HBO is not accurate, as confirmed by DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn.
The rumor started spreading when Dillahunt posted a picture of himself as Emerald Archer on Instagram, which he later removed. Since Dillahunt has been cast as William Macon, a character known for his self-righteousness and conspiracy theories, hidden behind a charismatic and calculating demeanor in the series Lanterns, it didn’t take long for fans to speculate that William Macon might actually be a cover for Green Arrow’s debut in the DCU.
It turns out that the actor wasn’t playing Green Arrow in Lanterns as speculated by a fan. When asked about it, Gunn quickly confirmed it was not true. Later, Dillahunt clarified that the picture was from a Halloween costume he wore years ago. He jokingly added that if they wanted an older, one-legged, conspiracy-theorist version of Green Arrow, he might have a chance, but in reality, he’s just a fan with no intention of causing any stir.
DC Fans Have Been Waiting for Green Arrow on the Big Screen Since the DCEU Days
Fans of the DC universe have longed to see Green Arrow on the silver screen since the inception of the DC Extended Universe, often envisioning “Sons of Anarchy” actor Charlie Hunnam as the perfect fit for the role. In fact, Hunnam himself admitted back in 2023 that Warner Bros. had proposed the idea of him portraying Green Arrow within the DCEU. Regrettably, Hunnam disclosed that he didn’t feel enthusiastic about embodying a superhero character, stating, “Some executives approached me with the idea of playing Green Arrow, and they were convinced it would be an exhilarating experience for me.
In the world of comics, it might seem unusual for Green Arrow to join the Lanterns, but this character has a rich history with Hal Jordan’s Green Lantern, going back to the 1970s when they were first teamed up by Neal Adams and Dennis O’Neil. However, despite his popularity, Green Arrow has only appeared in live-action on television, with Justin Hartley portraying him in Smallville and Stephen Amell in Arrow, as well as the extended Arrowverse.
Regarding the role of Green Arrow in the DCU, Gunn is considering bringing on a fresh actor. However, he’d prefer to see clips from one of the previous movies first to decide if he wants to join this new shared universe. Amell, who played Green Arrow for eight seasons and 170 episodes, expressed in February 2024 that he’s open to reprising the role if offered, but is content either way.
Lanterns is slated to .
