James Gunn Explains A Big Way The DCU Will Be Different Than The MCU, And I Totally Agree With His Assessment

As a seasoned gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in various worlds, I can wholeheartedly appreciate James Gunn‘s approach to the DC Universe (DCU). As someone who’s juggled multiple games and their expansions, I know the frustration of having to replay earlier levels just to understand the latest one.

As a dedicated fan, I can’t hide my excitement about how the superhero genre has been shaping pop culture for quite some time now. While many of us have been following the Marvel Cinematic Universe in chronological order, it’s clear that the DC Extended Universe is undergoing a significant transformation. The visionary James Gunn, one of its co-CEOs, is masterminding a fresh shared universe, and it all starts with his upcoming Superman film.

In contrast to both the Marvel Cinematic Universe (available on Disney+) and the old DCEU (on Max), both of which employed a serialized storytelling approach where one project affected another through crossovers, James Gunn, discussing the upcoming DCU, emphasized that each new project will be self-contained and understandable for someone who hasn’t watched its predecessors. In other words, he’s ensuring that each new story stands on its own.

I view DCU less as a series of interconnected films and TV shows centering around a common villain, and more as a cohesive universe rooted in a single setting. As a viewer, I prefer not to feel obligated to watch every piece of content to fully appreciate it. The creative direction within the DCU will vary based on the artists, directors, and production designers involved in each project.

It’s clear that this idea is quite exciting! Though I, being a dedicated superhero enthusiast who intends to watch every installment from both the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and DC Universe (DCU), not everyone shares my level of fervor. Therefore, James Gunn aims to create a universe that is accessible to all, allowing each project to be appreciated independently, regardless of prior events.

As a fan, I can confidently say that while each project from DC Studios may feel distinct, there’s no denying the presence of connective tissue tying them together. However, it seems that the upcoming DC movies and TV shows will provide ample context, ensuring that viewers won’t feel lost or require prior knowledge to appreciate each fresh addition to the universe.

Gunn’s insights seem very reasonable, aiming to ensure that each future DCU film can be easily understood by viewers. This problem has been noticed in some MCU productions previously. For example, The Marvels functioned as a follow-up to Captain Marvel, Ms. Marvel, and WandaVision. It’s possible that this much background knowledge might have contributed to The Marvels underperforming at the box office.

In essence, it appears that Gunn aims to establish a genuine DC interconnected film series, as the DCEU shifted away from continuous narrative storytelling towards director-centric productions.

Beginning July 11th, 2025, the DC Universe officially launches, starting with ‘Superman’. This initial film kicks off Phase One, also known as ‘Gods and Monsters’. At this moment, keep an eye on the 2025 movie release schedule.
