James Gunn hints Captain Boomerang Could Return to DCU

One consistent pattern in comic book films is that a character’s death in one film does not guarantee their permanent departure. While James Gunn’s new project marks a fresh beginning for the DC Extended Universe, there are certain characters and actors who will transition from the old DCEU into the new universe, with their storylines commencing this summer in “Superman”. Among those hoping to become part of this exclusive group is actor Jai Courtney, who portrayed Captain Boomerang in both David Ayer’s Suicide Squad film and James Gunn’s own Peacemaker series.

Despite meeting an unfortunate end in the initial scenes of Gunn’s film, Captain Boomerang – a lesser-known DC character – seems to have bid farewell to the franchise. However, during a recent interview with Variety while promoting his new movie “Dangerous Animals” at Cannes, Courtney hinted that we might not have seen the last of Boomerang and could potentially reappear. He mentioned that discussions about a possible comeback with Gunn have taken place.

Initially, I exclaimed, ‘Hey, buddy! Aren’t boomerangs awesome? And James replied, ‘Well, these rules aren’t exactly set in stone. Just because he vanishes here doesn’t mean he’s gone for good, correct?’ To which I enthusiastically agreed, ‘Absolutely!’ So there’s a glimmer of optimism within me, hoping that we might get to see more of Boomerang in the future.

James Gunn’s New Universe Is Already Bending the Rules

In establishing the new DCU, it appeared that James Gunn and Peter Safran were starting anew, distancing themselves from the characters of the DCEU. However, as more information about Gunn’s plans has come to light, things have shifted. Jason Momoa is moving on from his Aquaman role to rejoin the franchise as Lobo in “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow,” and Sean Gunn continues to play multiple roles within the franchise, having portrayed Weasel and Calendar Man in “The Suicide Squad” and now taking on Maxwell Lord in “Superman.

Speaking as a die-hard DC Universe fan, let me share some exciting news. As the DCU continues to unfold, there are numerous characters who are carrying on their tales. Among those confirmed to have made it through the DCEU’s transformation are Amanda Waller (portrayed brilliantly by Viola Davis), John Smith aka Peacemaker (the charismatic John Cena), Emilia Harcourt (Jennifer Holland, delivering a compelling performance), John Economos (Steve Agee, adding depth to his role), Weasel (Sean Gunn, bringing humor and mystery), and Blue Beetle (Xolo Maridueña, showing great promise). These characters will undoubtedly enrich the universe with their unique stories.

It’s uncertain at this point if Captain Boomerang will appear on that roster. Although Gal Gadot hinted she might return as Wonder Woman, and James Gunn expressed interest in collaborating with Margot Robbie (who plays Harley Quinn), it remains to be seen if these potential collaborations will materialize or not, since no official casting announcements have been made yet. This means there’s just as much possibility that they won’t happen as there is for them to become reality.
