As a lifelong Superman fan, the anticipation for James Gunn‘s upcoming film has me buzzing like an electric kryptonite-powered helicopter! The insights he’s been sharing about the production have only stoked my excitement.
James Gunn is offering a sneak peek into what fans can expect from his upcoming Superman.
Earlier this year, the co-chief of DC Studios and the filmmaker shared insights about the upcoming superhero movie with reporters on set (as reported by Gizmodo). During their conversation, they hinted at the start of the film, discussed how Top Gun: Maverick impacted its production, and explained their decision on Superman’s costume. The lead role in this film is being played by David Corenswet as Superman, with Rachel Brosnahan portraying Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult taking on the character of Lex Luthor.
Admittedly, capturing shots of gunfire in the sky can be quite challenging, but luckily, we had an iconic action movie featuring Tom Cruise to draw some inspiration from.
He mentioned that movies such as ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ served as inspiration. To capture our action scenes, we employed actual drones to film sequences involving Superman and his flying companions, including The Engineer. This was done on sound stages. We now have incredibly small, advanced drones at our disposal. Some of the world’s top pilots are working with them.
The director behind “Guardians of the Galaxy” hinted at an initial scene in the upcoming “Superman,” where the famous superhero grapples with reconciling his extraterrestrial roots and his earthly family ties.
He mentioned that we jump straight into the thick of things. Already established characters include Superman and Lois Lane who have a prior acquaintance, while Lex Luthor harbors intense dislike for Superman from the get-go, despite them not having met personally yet. Thus, we’ll dive right in, skipping the initial setup.
Gunn pointed out that after introducing Superman into the thick of things, the movie’s primary narrative unfolds in a relatively brief span.
In other locations, the creator of Peacemaker divulged their thought process behind selecting the updated Man of Steel outfit, featuring Corenswet in the traditional red briefs.
Gunn mentioned that they tested various alternatives, some with trunks and others without. David (presumably referring to director James Gunn) said that Superman aims to make children feel safe rather than fearful. After all, he’s an alien with extraordinary abilities, capable of shooting beams from his eyes. Despite being a powerful figure who might seem scary, Superman wants to be loved and seen as a symbol of hope and optimism.
He went on to say, “He adopts the attire of a professional wrestler. His choice of clothing instills confidence and radiates hope and positivity. This resonated with me deeply, and it seems foolish to try to present Superman’s costume as lacking whimsy at its core, especially since he is a superhero. He is the original one, known for his vibrant colors, and that’s who he represents.
Superman is set to hit theaters on July 11, 2025.
