As a lifelong fan of DC Comics and a devoted dog owner myself, I can’t help but be excited about James Gunn‘s new take on Superman. The trailer has already piqued my interest with its unique portrayal of the Man of Steel, and the inclusion of Krypto, his loyal canine companion, only adds to the intrigue.
This morning, a fresh trailer for James Gunn’s adaptation of Superman was unveiled, and without a doubt, one standout moment was the appearance of Superman’s canine companion, Krypto. The scene showed the dog bursting through the snow to aid his injured master, tugging him by the cape to safety. Despite appearances suggesting he’s a well-behaved pet, according to Gunn, things might not be as they seem.
In an interview with Deadline while discussing the trailer for Superman, Gunn described the bond between David Corenswet’s character and Krypto as “complex.” This element adds intrigue to the movie, as he also mentioned that it offers fans a fresh perspective on the DC superhero, presenting aspects of him that haven’t been shown much in past films.
In essence, this film isn’t primarily focused on power. Instead, it delves into the complexities of a character, exploring his identity as an individual and his daily struggles. The opening scene gives us a glimpse of another side of him that unfolds throughout the storyline.
“His relationship with Krypto is complicated. He’s not nearly the best dog. There’s a lot more to Krypto than you see in this trailer.”
As a dog-loving movie enthusiast, I totally get where Gunn’s coming from when he talks about the complex bond between humans and their pets. Dogs can be quite moody at times, which can be challenging to manage. Now, when it comes to Superman, we’re left wondering what role Krypto will play – will he leave his paw prints on the furniture? Maybe he’ll regurgitate his dinner on the carpet? Or could we see him leading Clark Kent for a change instead of the other way around? Frankly, I’m excited to find out! With all the anticipated action, drama, and special effects, it’s quite possible that this little Labrador retriever could be the unexpected star of the show.
‘Superman’ Is About “Real People Having Real Lives”
One reason Krypto is emphasized in the trailer is that, apart from Superman owning a dog demonstrating his human-like qualities, it also aligns with Gunn’s movie theme, which focuses on “ordinary people living real lives.” After all, nothing signifies authenticity more than caring for a four-legged companion. It’s hard to dislike someone who loves dogs; it’s practically impossible.
In this fictional universe, he resides amidst beings with extraordinary powers – superheroes. Yet, the world is remarkably relatable, blending elements of reality seamlessly with its supernatural inhabitants. The narrative revolves around everyday lives of ordinary people, albeit in a setting where metahumans coexist. Superman shares friendships with other such superheroes.
From the sneak peeks alone, it appears that among the characters I’ll be seeing on the big screen are Guy Gardner, Hawkgirl, and Michael Hoult, more famously known as Mr. Terrific. Together with Lois Lane and Krypto, they promise to deliver what could potentially be the most outstanding Superman portrayal in years. However, until this movie graces our cinemas on July 11, 2025, we’ll have to wait and see if it truly lives up to its potential.
