As a lifelong fan of DC comics and someone who has spent countless hours immersed in the dark, gritty world of Gotham City, I can’t help but feel a sense of excitement at the prospect of a Joker spinoff series. The character has always been one of my favorites, embodying the embodiment of chaos and insanity that makes him such an intriguing and terrifying adversary for Batman.
Over the weekend, the final episode of “The Penguin” spinoff from “The Batman” series aired, leaving fans delighted by its portrayal of a captivating Batman villain. Every Batman enthusiast acknowledges that these antagonists are just as intriguing as the Caped Crusader themselves and deserve their own complex narratives. The success of this series has sparked hopes among DC followers for more films or television shows delving into the villains that make Batman comics so exhilarating. Among these, there’s one character that fans can never seem to get enough of – the Joker, Batman’s arch-nemesis. If “The Penguin” has shown us anything, it’s that audiences are yearning for thought-provoking narratives and characters as complex as The Joker, a figure notorious for his intricate past and tormented psyche.
In Matt Reeves’ 2022 movie “The Batman”, Barry Keoghan introduced his version of The Joker, leaving fans speculating about how this interpretation would stack up against previous ones, particularly Heath Ledger’s unforgettable portrayal in “The Dark Knight”. There had been whispers of a series centered around the Joker as a potential spinoff, sparking excitement among fans who were eager to see more of the iconic supervillain. However, James Gunn recently put these rumors to rest on social media, stating that there’s currently no Joker spinoff series in development. Yet, it might be premature for Gunn to rule out a Joker series completely.

It’s clear that fans were far from pleased with the sequel to Todd Phillips’ 2019 Joker movie – they felt it failed to capture the essence of the iconic villain and didn’t live up to its potential. Ever since the character was introduced in Batman #1 back in 1940, fans have been captivated by the complexities of The Joker. The successful films featuring The Batman and The Penguin serve as a reminder of the trust placed in Matt Reeves and his vision for the universe he’s crafting. Neglecting to explore the character of the Joker in this reboot would be a real missed chance.
As rumors swirled, I, a die-hard film enthusiast, found myself hoping that the upcoming Batman series might bridge the gap between “The Batman II” and “The Batman III.” With a tentative 2026 release for the second installment in Reeves’ trilogy, there’s speculation that Keoghan could make a brief cameo, potentially hinting at his role as the main antagonist in the third film. A standalone series would offer Reeves and Keoghan an opportunity to delve into the Joker’s character, ensuring that his portrayal resonates with DC fans and aligns with his comic book origin story.
Fans Would Get to See The Joker in All His Villainous Glory
In the final episode of “The Penguin,” viewers found themselves both stunned and captivated as it showcased the immense potential of the creators in manipulating villains within this world. Throughout the series, fans found themselves sympathizing with Oz (Colin Farrell) at certain moments, yet it was Sofia Falcone, or Sofia Gigante (Cristin Milioti), who emerged as the main antagonist. However, spectators were led astray when the finale revealed Oz eliminating any vulnerabilities in his life to reincarnate the Penguin, serving as a stark reminder of the true evil this villain embodies. Despite being a challenging adversary for Batman, the Penguin pales in comparison to the Joker and the impact he has on The Dark Knight.
This spinoff series demonstrated that the showrunners can craft a story fit for the Joker, satisfying longtime DC fans by portraying him as the embodiment of insanity and chaos as depicted in the comics. A glimpse of Reeves’ 2022 film’s Joker, featuring a severely scarred Keoghan, was shown in a deleted scene that left viewers with an unsettling feeling. Fans are always eager to see The Joker, and if executed well, this series could boost DC’s success and alter fan opinions about the studio’s approach to its superheroes and villains.
A Joker Series Needs to Avoid The Penguin’s Huge Mistake
As a devoted movie enthusiast, I must admit that one point frequently brought up by fans about “The Penguin” was the noticeable lack of Batman. The series barely hinted at the presence of the World’s Greatest Detective, and despite the chaos of gang wars shaking Gotham City, there was no sign of the Dark Knight. The finale provided a tantalizing glimpse into the challenge that lay ahead for Oz, as the city’s self-proclaimed king, with the Bat Signal illuminating in the distance. However, this tease didn’t quite quell the fans’ curiosity and left unanswered questions about his absence. While it’s possible he was dealing with the remnants of the Riddler’s (Paul Dano) scheme, as Batman, one would expect him to intervene during such a critical moment for the city.
In a potential Joker spinoff, it’s crucial not to overlook the significance of Batman. If Batman isn’t there, the storyline needs to address his absence and make it clear that he’s causing trouble somewhere else. The show should regularly reference Batman and portray him as a feared figure among criminals. It would be unrealistic for Batman to be entirely absent from a series centered around the Joker. By the way, DC’s latest hit, “The Penguin,” is now streaming on Max.
