Fans are puzzling over a fresh 30-second TV commercial for James Gunn‘s forthcoming Superman, as they ponder the intriguing changes in the Man of Steel’s facial appearance.
On January 27th, the advertisement named “Icon” was unveiled, showcasing a long sequence of David Corenswet portraying Superman soaring over a vast, frozen wilderness.
Or:
The ad called “Icon” premiered on January 27th, depicting an extended shot of David Corenswet as Superman flying across a frozen tundra.
Both versions maintain the original’s clarity and readability while using more common, everyday language.
In the series, it seems that Corenswet’s eyes are more expansive and set further apart than normal, leading one viewer of Threads to remark, “There’s something about his face that appears slightly odd. I understand there’s still time for fine-tuning the computer-generated imagery.
Gun’s response was: “His face has no computer-generated effects at all. Close-up shots with a wide-angle lens can make faces appear differently. The background scenes from Svalbard, Norway are entirely authentic, just like the actor, David.”
Or even more concisely:
Gun said: “His face is real and not digitally altered. Wide-angle lenses can distort close-ups. The backdrop in Svalbard is genuine, as is David himself.
Many social media users, who are staunch supporters of Henry Cavill’s portrayal of Superman, swiftly responded with sarcastic remarks such as “I trust him,” or “We can see it,” when the news was announced.
memes swiftly seized the opportunity and amplified the controversy, replacing Jake Gyllenhaal’s face with various versions of characters from Steve Buscemi’s Mr. Deeds, Uzo Aduba’s Crazy Eyes, and Marty Feldman’s Igor from Young Frankenstein, along with other wide-eyed figures.
On July 11, 2025, the grand Warner Bros. productions will grace our movie screens. The cast includes Nicholas Hoult portraying Lex Luthor, Rachel Brosnahan stepping into the role of Lois Lane, Isabel Merced taking on Hawkgirl, and Milly Alcock as Supergirl.
It begins July 11th. #Superman
