James Gunn Shares First Look at DCU's Jimmy Olsen

As a seasoned cinephile with a penchant for superheroes and a soft spot for characters that often play second fiddle, I am genuinely thrilled to see James Gunn shining light on Jimmy Olsen, Superman’s loyal sidekick. With Skyler Gisondo stepping into the role, we can expect a delightful blend of humor and heart that will surely resonate with fans.

James Gunn has unveiled a fresh official glimpse at ‘Superman’, but unlike Lois Lane, Lex Luthor, or other familiar DC characters, it features Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen. First appearing in the radio show ‘The Adventures of Superman’ back in 1940, Jimmy Olsen is a significant figure in Superman’s entourage, often referred to as “Superman’s friend.” He typically works as a photographer for The Daily Planet, and throughout DC Comics lore, he has an extraordinary background. He has undergone numerous superpowered transformations, was once the love interest of Supergirl, and served as the starting point for Jack Kirby’s New Gods tale, which was rooted in Jimmy Olsen comics. Gunn posted the image on Threads with a message that read:

“Here’s wishing a Happy Anniversary to Jimmy Olsen, Superman’s trusty friend! He first graced the pages on this day in 1941, although he made an earlier appearance as ‘office boy’ in Action Comics Issue 6. Created by Jerry Siegel, Joe Shuster, and Bob Maxwell, we eagerly anticipate Skyler Gisondo’s portrayal of him in Superman, set to hit the screens on July 11, 2025.”

Superman’s Pal

Over the past few years, Ty Consiglio has risen to fame as a hilarious actor. Following his takeover of the Young Shawn role in the popular series “Psych,” previously played by Liam James, Consiglio went on to appear in movies like “The Amazing Spider-Man,” “Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb,” and “Vacation.” In 2019, he made a significant impact with roles in the well-received film “Booksmart” and the successful TV series “The Righteous Gemstones,” cementing his status as a sought-after comedic talent and delighting fans when he was chosen to play Jimmy Olsen.

Although numerous unofficial photos from the set have surfaced online, showcasing actors like Rachael Brosnahan as Lois Lane and various characters such as Green Lantern and Hawkgirl, Gunn has been meticulous about sharing official content with the public. Interestingly, the photo of Gisondo playing Jimmy Olsen is merely the third officially released image from Superman, following the initial S teaser to initiate filming and the first picture of David Corenswet in costume. Surprisingly, a photo of Jimmy Olsen was not what fans might have anticipated seeing.

It’s refreshing to see James Gunn planning to elevate Jimmy Olsen in his portrayal, marking a shift from how the character has been presented over the last ten years. On Supergirl, Mehcad Brooks portrayed an altered version of Jimmy Olsen who was somewhat detached from the Superman narrative. The upcoming season of Superman & Lois will introduce a new Jimmy Olsen for their universe, played by Douglas Smith. In Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, Zack Snyder controversially killed off the character in the movie’s opening scene, and he was not explicitly identified as Jimmy Olsen in the theater release. However, with Gunn’s recent casting announcement and the TV show My Adventures with Superman featuring Jimmy Olsen as a key character, it seems that the minor character might be stepping into the limelight once more.
