The excitement for James Gunn’s DC Universe continues to build as we edge closer to his upcoming Superman film this summer. For enthusiasts of the DCU, there is no dearth of content on the horizon, and the broader “Gods and Monsters” plan boasts some intriguing additions. Among the characters set to appear is Lobo, portrayed by Jason Momoa. To mark the anniversary of the comic book character, James Gunn humorously posted a text he received from Momoa about the role.
Ever since it was publicly announced that Jason Momoa would portray Lobo, he’s been expressing his enthusiasm about the role in a series of lively social media posts. In a recent discussion on Threads celebrating the character’s anniversary, director James Gunn revealed a brief, upbeat message Momoa sent him regarding Lobo.
On the anniversary of Lobo, my thoughts often drift back to a message I received from “prideofgypsies” on the day Peter and I were named heads of DC Studios – the very day when Jason and I first talked about him joining the DC Universe as Lobo. It’s been an absolute joy witnessing Jason breathe life into this character, and I can hardly wait to share that experience with you all.
The post featured a snapshot showing an exchange between Jason Momoa and James Gunn where Momoa said “Fucking LOBO,” to which Gunn replied, “I’ve been telling you for years that you should play Lobo, and I’m not kidding.” Additionally, a depiction of the comic book character Lobo was included in the post.
Previously discussed, Momoa has been open about his affinity for the character. In a different blog post, our ex-Aquaman expressed that Lobo was his preferred comic book character when he used to collect them. Even in this post, he acknowledged Gunn’s view of him as an ideal casting choice. This sentiment is echoed by many fans, with numerous comments in the thread expressing agreement with Gunn.
- I’m pretty sure he was born to play that role.
- It’s one of those fate things, you know?
- The role was made for him. Perfect casting
- This is such peak casting
- Show us a first look 😭🙏
As for the topic of previews or sneak peeks into DCU’s Lobo, Gunn has explained that we need to exercise some patience. For now, we’ll have to hold off on more details about this cosmic bounty hunter since his appearance won’t be until 2026 in the film Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. Comic book enthusiasts are eagerly anticipating this live-action Lobo, and even those who aren’t fans have something to look forward to and appreciate.
Although I’m not a comic book enthusiast personally, I must admit that James Gunn’s elevation to the leadership role at DC has me quite thrilled about the upcoming additions to the DC Universe. With the achievements of “The Suicide Squad” and “The Batman”, it appears that DC films are beginning to find their bearings. I am also eagerly anticipating the Gods and Monsters storyline in the DCU.
