James Gunn Shares Wild Behind-the-Scenes Superman Secrets!

Sony Pictures made some big announcements at CinemaCon about its upcoming movies, particularly two new Spider-Man projects, I Know What You Did Last Summer, and Karate Kid: Legends. Now it’s Warner Bros. Pictures’ turn. Their much-anticipated two-hour presentation starts today (April 1) at 4:30 p.m. PDT., and the co-chair and co-CEO of DC Studios, James Gunn, is playfully expressing his frustration about Superman actor David Corenswet before the panel. During an interview with Time, Gunn gave an unconventional but reasonable compliment to the actor.

David can be quite inquisitive, always questioning the smallest details of every situation. Sometimes I find this annoying, but what I truly appreciate are the instances when my patience wore thin due to his constant questioning, yet I still answered him. It’s fascinating to see how he transforms those questions into something extraordinary in his performance.

Even Kryptonite doesn’t seem to hinder Superman in this situation, as he was already a hot topic on X, formerly known as Twitter, due to CinemaCon. But things got even more thrilling when three of the film’s stars – Corenswet, Nicholas Hoult (playing Lex Luthor), and Rachel Brosnahan (as Lois Lane) – shared a video together for social media. In this clip, they revealed that an extended preview of Superman’s upcoming big-screen exploits will be shown during Jason Momoa’s upcoming Minecraft movie, set to premiere in theaters on April 4th.

‘Superman’s Fellow Heroes Think of Kal-El as Being “Naive”

A preview of the expanded ‘Superman’ is teaming up with ‘A Minecraft Movie’, fueling anticipation for Warner Bros. Pictures’ CinemaCon presentation tonight, and fans are eagerly waiting to see more details about upcoming projects such as ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’, ‘Lanterns’, and ‘Clayface’. For now, the spotlight is on David Corenswet’s portrayal of Superman, with DCU fans enjoying the ride. However, it seems that some characters in the upcoming film view Kal-El as somewhat green or naive, as Director James Gunn hinted during a recent interview when he mentioned that Green Lantern (Nathan Fillion) and Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced) might find Superman a bit naive.

In the bustling metropolis, far from home, Clark Kent/Superman is seeing increasing success both as a journalist and a hero. He’s smitten with a woman who remains hesitant towards him, yet he has also formed friendships with some superpowered individuals who appreciate him but view him as somewhat innocent. These novel aspects of his life have left him slightly off-balance, and we shall witness how these developments impact his moral compass and decisions.

The benevolence exhibited by Superman, or the Man of Steel, is not limited only to his character but extends to the actor playing him. Specifically, Gunn, who has worked on Guardians of the Galaxy and Suicide Squad films, made it a point that Corenswet would embody this one particular trait if he wished to don the Superman cape. Gunn suggested Corenswet draw inspiration from actors like Chris Pratt and John Cena, whom he had previously collaborated with. Moreover, during an interview with Time, Gunn shared this insight.

1) “Both Pratt and Cena consistently showed kindness and consideration towards everyone around them, which is not typically found on sets that are centered around an actor or director’s ego. David, however, stands out as being more than just a superhero; he embodies Superman even in his quirks. He enjoys listening to old jazz tunes, which might seem ordinary but it’s part of who he is – a simple man navigating complex times.

The eagerly awaited Superman movie by James Gunn, titled “Man of Steel,” takes flight at the box office in July 2025. Simultaneously, the return of Superman paves the way for other DCU projects, such as Kara Zor-El’s (Milly Alcock) maiden big-screen outing since 1984. Notably, this includes her collaboration with Jason Momoa in “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” (2026), and the streaming series “Lanterns,” both set to debut in 2025 as well.
