James Gunn Teases DCU Fortnite Crossover, but No Game Yet

DC Studios is jumping into gaming, but they dropped this news way earlier than anyone expected.

Fortnite has collaborated with superheroes before, but Marvel characters have dominated these crossovers. Although Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman have been in Fortnite previously, DC hasn’t had the same level of involvement as its competitor. However, this is set to change in the near future.

As a thrilled fan, I’m excited to share that James Gunn himself confirmed to ComicBook that Fortnite will be welcoming DC Universe characters into their universe through crossovers! When directly asked about potential collaborations, he didn’t hesitate and said, “Absolutely yes!” Peter Safran further revealed that partnering with Fortnite is simply part of a grand strategy to bridge the gap between DC Studios and the gaming world.

Previously, video game crossovers were rarely seen due to a historical lack of cooperation. But now, DC Studios seems to be engaging in discussions with Fortnite about potential characters to feature, even going so far as having James Gunn personally approve the designs.

It hasn’t been clarified by either Gunn or Safran which DC Universe characters will appear in Fortnite. However, given that Superman (2025) is set to premiere on July 11, it’s likely that characters like Superman, Lois Lane, Lex Luthor, and possibly other heroes and villains from the film could be featured.

Collaborations with Fortnite are imminent, but fans eagerly anticipating a complete DC Universe game will have to exercise patience. James Gunn revealed that the debut of the official DC Universe game is still several years off, so it won’t be launched before at least 2027.

Although there has been a considerable delay, DC Studios is now mapping out how video games will align with its overarching cinematic universe. Currently, Gunn and Safran are engaging in discussions with top-tier game developers like NetherRealm (Mortal Kombat) and Rocksteady (Batman: Arkham) to ensure that future DCU games adhere to the franchise’s long-term vision.

Previously, DC games were produced independently from the movies. However, moving forward, every project will be overseen by DC Studios’ management to ensure a unified universe. As explained by Safran, this method promotes a cohesive storyline where films, television series, and video games seamlessly align under a single vision.

As a passionate fan, I can’t help but get excited about the prospect of DC Universe games, even if we might need to be patient and wait a few years. But let me tell you, with the recent Fortnite crossovers, it seems like DC is making its mark in the gaming world even bigger!
