As a longtime DC fan and someone who has seen their fair share of animated series, I must say that the renewal of Creature Commandos for a second season is nothing short of a delightful surprise this holiday season! With my fingers crossed for more monster mayhem and heart-tugging moments, I can’t help but feel like a kid in a candy store!
Today, DC Studios has an additional cause for celebration. The sensational Superman teaser trailer, which shattered records for a Warner Bros. release and garnered enthusiastic responses from fans, isn’t the only source of joy. In perfect timing for the holiday season, their animated streaming series, Creature Commandos, has received some positive news as well!
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the animated series Creature Commandos has been granted a second season due to its exceptional reception following its premiere on Max earlier this month. With an impressive 95% score on Rotten Tomatoes, the show’s positive reviews have not gone unnoticed. Here’s what DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran had to say about the exciting renewal:
We’re excited to collaborate with Max once more on another season filled with Creature Commandos chaos! From our successful debut of Peacemaker to The Penguin’s astounding comeback, and the groundbreaking launch of Creature Commandos, Max has consistently surpassed industry standards and even our wildest dreams. A big thank you goes out to Casey, Sarah, Pia, Sono, and the entire DC Studios team for your incredible backing. We’re honored to have Max as part of our family.
According to Gunn and Safran, an impressive detail emerged about the show “Creature Commandos”. It turned out to be the third-highest watched series in the initial week of launch on Max streaming service, with a total viewership of 22 million minutes. Amy Gravitt, Executive Vice President of HBO & Max Comedy Programming, expressed great satisfaction with these figures and commended the series upon hearing about its renewal. Gravitt stated, “James Gunn has created an extraordinary group of misfit monsters who evoke emotions and make you cheer for them fervently. We’re thrilled to keep telling their tales alongside James, Dean Lorey, Peter Safran, and our valued partners at DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation.
Creature Commandos is the First Installment of the New DC Universe
The entirety of the seven episodes in the TV show titled “Creature Commandos” were penned by Gunn, while Lorey oversaw the series as its executive producer. This program marks both the debut on television and initial installment of the updated DC Universe. The plot revolves around a covert team of monsters who are brought together by Amanda Waller (portrayed by Viola Davis). In addition to Davis, the show boasts the voices of Indira Varma, Sean Gunn, Alan Tudyk, David Harbour, Zoë Chao, and Frank Grillo, as well as other renowned actors who make recurring appearances or guest spots.
The comic book series revolves around the Creature Commandos squad, initially introduced in DC Comics’ “Weird War Tales” issue 93 from 1980. This dynamic group was thought up by J.M. DeMatteis and Pat Broderick. The original lineup included a human commander, a werewolf, a vampire, Frankenstein’s monster, and a gorgon. A contemporary version of the team made its debut in 2000, in “Creature Commandos” issues 1-8. This updated group was penned by Tim Truman and illustrated by Scot Eaton. Although the entire team hasn’t been depicted in other formats before, General Matthew Shrieve, the leader of the team, was featured in season three of “Arrow” on The CW, with Marc Singer portraying him.
Creature Commandos can currently be streamed on Max.
