Among the many films slated for release in 2025, one that’s generating a lot of excitement could well be “Superman” directed by James Gunn. This film marks a fresh take on the most iconic comic book character ever, and it’s a key component of the revamped DC movie universe. Yet, a hero is as strong as his adversary, and in this case, Superman will be facing off against one of the greatest villains of all time – Lex Luthor, portrayed by Nicholas Hoult.
Hoult had been trying to find his place in the comic book movie landscape. He had previously been on the short list to play Batman in the role that eventually went to Robert Pattinson. He also came close to playing Superman himself before David Corenswet took the part. Instead, James Gunn cast him as Lex Luthor. Gunn jokes to Fandango that the reason is that Hoult is just a very angry man, saying…
I hired him because I said, ‘This man is so full of hatred.’
James Gunn is undeniably teasing the actor, and Hoult seems to enjoy the banter by feigning disdain for being part of the interview. Given his past roles as villains in films like “Nosferatu,” Hoult has a knack for portraying antagonistic characters convincingly. He might not genuinely harbor hatred, but he’s skilled at convincing us that he does.
In the trailer for “Superman,” Nicholas Hoult plays Lex Luthor, but there isn’t much insight given into his character. Throughout the comics and previous adaptations, Luthor has been portrayed in various ways. However, Gunn’s recent comments suggest that this version of Luthor will be characterized by intense hatred, which could make for a unique portrayal of the character in the upcoming DC film, unlike any we’ve seen on screen before.
One intriguing aspect about the upcoming “Superman” movie is the mystery surrounding how it will stand out from previous adaptations. A key factor could be the portrayal of Lex Luthor, who harbors a deep-seated antagonism towards Superman, marking a departure from past iterations. Additionally, Nicholas Hoult’s performance as Luthor is expected to impress, as he skillfully conveys a complex character that isn’t solely defined by hatred.

Given the circumstances, I can understand why someone would feel frustrated if they missed out on two significant superhero roles. However, it’s evident that Hoult is handling everything with grace and calmness.
I’ve finally landed that significant comic book character part I’d been yearning for, and it feels amazing! Although the exact outcome of Luthor’s storyline in ‘Superman’ remains unclear, given the burgeoning DC Universe, it seems improbable that he’ll make an appearance in just one movie. We’ll learn more when ‘Superman’ graces the silver screen in July.
