As a long-time fan of DC comics and Alan Tudyk’s versatile acting career, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and apprehension about his mysterious role in James Gunn’s upcoming Superman movie. With Tudyk’s extensive history of portraying various DC characters, it’s anyone’s guess whether he’ll be reprising Doctor Phosphorus or taking on a new character entirely.
If you’ve been out of the loop regarding James Gunn’s upcoming movie, “Superman,” let me fill you in on some exciting talent joining the cast. David Corenswet is set to play Kal-El/Clark Kent, while Rachel Brosnahan will take on Lois Lane. The rest of the star-studded cast includes Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Wendell Pierce as Perry White, and Frank Grillo making his live-action debut as Rick Flag Sr., a role he previously voiced in “Creature Commandos.” With another character from the animated series potentially joining the cast, I can’t help but feel that David Corenswet might have some stiff competition as Superman.
As reported by Deadline, actor Alan Tudyk has been cast for an unspecified role in the upcoming ‘Superman’ production. Known for his roles in ‘Firefly’ and currently starring in ‘Resident Alien’, Tudyk is no stranger to the DC Universe; he’s voiced Doctor Phosphorus in ‘Creature Commandos’. However, this is just the beginning of his extensive involvement with DC. He’s portrayed Mr. Nobody in ‘Doom Patrol’, The Joker and Clayface in ‘Harley Quinn’, Barry Allen/The Flash in ‘Batman: The Brave and the Bold’, Superman in ‘Justice League: War’, and Green Arrow, Psimon, and Captain Cold in ‘Young Justice’.
Why Doctor Phosphorous Appearing In Superman Could Spell Trouble
It’s possible that Alan Tudyk is playing a secret character in Superman, given the mystery surrounding his role. On the other hand, Frank Grillo returning as Rick Flag Sr. in the 2025 movies suggests there might be ties between Superman and Doctor Phosphorous (or perhaps other members of the Creature Commandos). If Doctor Phosphorous survives the Creature Commandos series, these connections could become more apparent in Superman.
From what’s been hinted by leaked photos, it seems that Rick Flag Sr., who is working under Amanda Waller, will likely pose a challenge to Superman. This isn’t completely unexpected. If Flag is also bringing Phosphorous, his ability to control radiation could potentially give him an advantage over Superman, as he might be able to weaken Metropolis’ protector by manipulating the radiation. Few can match Superman in raw strength, but Phosphorous’ unique abilities could make a difference.
Maybe Alan Tudyk Is Playing A Different DC Character
On the other hand, we shouldn’t rule out that Alan Tudyk is playing someone different in Superman. After all, Sean Gunn is voicing both Weasel (whom he first played in The Suicide Squad) and G.I. Robot in Creature Commandos, but he’s also set to bring Maxwell Lord to life in the DC Universe. If James Gunn’s brother can play multiple DCU roles, why can’t Tudyk?
As a dedicated fan, if it’s indeed true about Tudyk’s role in the DC Universe, I’m left utterly intrigued about who this enigmatic character might be. Whether he’s a hero, a villain, or something in between, the mystery deepens. Yet, one fervent wish I hold is that if he’s not Doctor Phosphorous in Superman’s universe, then I hope this other character graces us with his presence in numerous DCU projects, rather than just a single appearance. After all, such an accomplished actor deserves the opportunity to shine across the franchise for years to come, not just as a fleeting moment.
Superman makes his big-screen return on July 11, 2025, while Creature Commandos will debut on December 5. We’ll share details about Alan Tudyk’s role in the first project as soon as they are revealed to the public.
