As a seasoned critic who has spent countless hours immersed in the vast tapestry of cinematic storytelling, I must admit that the news of Alan Tudyk joining James Gunn’s Superman film has sent a thrill down my spine. A man of versatile talents and an undeniable knack for breathing life into every character he touches, Tudyk is undoubtedly a cherished gem in the world of acting.
Although production on James Gunn’s Superman movie wrapped over the summer, there are still exciting casting updates emerging. A popular actor has been confirmed to join the cast, expanding an already impressive lineup of actors portraying iconic DC characters such as Lois Lane, Lex Luthor, Jimmy Olson, Perry White, and Ma and Pa Kent. Additionally, other DC characters like Mister Terrific, Hawkgirl, Metamorpho, Guy Gardner’s Green Lantern, The Engineer, and more are part of the ensemble. Now, it seems that Alan Tudyk has also been cast in the upcoming DCU film.
According to Deadline, Alan Tudyk is joining the cast of Superman, but the specific part he’ll play hasn’t been revealed yet. Known for his beloved roles such as Walsh from Firefly and its film spin-off Serenity, Tudyk has an extensive filmography that includes I, Robot, 3:10 to Yuma, Tucker and Dale vs. Evil, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, and currently stars in the hit series Resident Alien. Additionally, he’s been a lucky charm for Walt Disney Animation as he lends his voice to every animated film since Wreck-It Ralph and will next be heard in Moana 2.
Alan Tudyk’s Long-Running History With DC
Alan Tudyk has a rich background in portraying DC Comics characters, starting with his voice role as Barry Allen/The Flash in Batman: Brave and the Bold. The subsequent year saw him voicing Oliver Queen/Green Arrow on Young Justice. In 2017, he took on the part of Van Wayne, Bruce Wayne’s bumbling cousin, in the brief-lived DC Universe-set sitcom Powerless. The following year, he appeared as Mr. Nobody, the antagonist in Doom Patrol‘s first season. Currently, he lends his voice to a variety of characters from Harley Quinn, including both The Joker and Clayface.
Alan Tudyk is already a part of James Gunn’s DC Universe, lending his voice to Doctor Phosphorus in the animated series “Creature Commandos”. Interestingly, Frank Grillo will reprise his role as Rick Flag Sr., initially seen in animation, in the live-action version of Superman. Although this might imply that Tudyk plays Doctor Phosphorus in Superman, it’s possible he could be portraying another character instead. Meanwhile, Sean Gunn will voice both G.I. Robot and Weasel in “Creature Commandos” but is also set to play Maxwell Lord in the DCU, demonstrating that actors can voice characters in animation while playing separate roles in live-action.
As a die-hard fan of the silver screen, I can’t help but ponder over the intriguing possibility that Nathan Fillion, aka Tudyk, might embody Doctor Phosphorus in our beloved DC Universe. Yet, it’s equally captivating to imagine him portraying an entirely distinct character instead. Could we see him as a mischievous villain like Mister Mxyzptlk? Or perhaps a charming supporting character such as Bo “Bibbo” Bibbowski? The suspense is killing me! Whatever the role, Tudyk’s casting adds fuel to the fire of my anticipation for Superman.
The movie “Superman” will be released in theaters on July 11, 2025.
