There’s been a lot of discussion about James Gunn’s latest comments on DCU games, particularly his mention of Rocksteady and NetherRealm Studios. Although it would be exciting to have games that align with the broader cinematic universe, many fans are eagerly waiting for Injustice 3 to get approved.
During a DC Studios presentation, Gunn and Peter Safran discussed their ongoing discussions with developers from various studios about potential projects in the future. James Gunn hinted at an upcoming project but cautioned that it won’t be released for several years. As a result, they emphasized the anticipation surrounding future Fortnite collaborations since fans are eagerly waiting for them.
Discussing NetherRealm Studios and DC together naturally leads people to contemplate about Injustice 3. Given the acclaim these games have received, it’s a pity if they don’t produce another installment. They excel at weaving compelling narratives while maintaining an easy-to-grasp fighting system, so it’s disappointing that the franchise’s future is in doubt.
If you’re new here, the Injustice series are DC-themed fighting games that share combat mechanics similar to Mortal Kombat, excluding Fatalities. In this alternate universe, Joker caused Superman to lose his sanity by killing Lois Lane, transforming him into a tyrannical ruler of Earth. Given the circumstances, it’s no surprise that Batman finds himself opposing his former ally, leading to numerous two-dimensional battles presented in three-dimensional graphics.
In contrast to the usual “Good Justice League versus Bad Justice League” narrative, the second game presents an escalated situation. Instead of the traditional lineup, both Batman and Superman find themselves in a difficult predicament where they must work together unwillingly to vanquish Brainiac. This creates a highly suspenseful storyline with drastically different conclusions, contingent on which side you support.
Both Injustice games wisely adopted Mortal Kombat’s approach by offering substantial single-player content. The first installment was rich in various Arcade Mode and Survival Mode options that boosted its replay value. On the other hand, the second game features a Multiverse where players can progress their chosen characters, earning gear, which essentially serve as new costumes.
Frankly speaking, should there be an Injustice 3, I’d prefer they abandon the bothersome armor system found in Injustice 2. On the surface, traversing multiple crisis-stricken Earths for new cosmetics sounds enjoyable. Nevertheless, the Random Number Generator (RNG) can be overly powerful and completing the game’s armor sets can be challenging. Moreover, specific moves are limited by gear parts, which gives each character an unfinished feel.
It’s uncertain whether NetherRealm has the flexibility to alter this situation, as Warner Bros. has been focusing on live-service aspects in recent projects. Despite the significant flop of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, the company continues to charge a premium for their $70 games. So, it wouldn’t be unexpected if Injustice 3 features more mandatory cosmetics and in-game purchases.
