As a seasoned horror movie enthusiast with a keen eye for character development and a soft spot for intriguing backstories, I can’t help but be thrilled about James McAvoy’s portrayal of the enigmatic antagonist, Paddy, in Speak No Evil. The fact that he based his character on the infamous Andrew Tate, a figure notorious for his controversial views and toxic masculinity, adds an eerie layer of authenticity to the role.
In an upcoming remake of the horror movie “Speak No Evil,” star James McAvoy has shared his motivations for portraying the pushy villain, Paddy. According to Empire magazine, McAvoy drew inspiration from a particular individual who stirred much debate – Andrew Tate. He modeled the despicable, toxic masculine character on none other than this controversial figure.
“What I found intriguing about the character was his self-perception as somewhat emulating Andrew Tate, a figure from the West Country.”
He’s saying something like, “I plan to show you the experience of being a man once more.” However, there’s an understated tone to it that doesn’t quite match Andrew Tate’s persona. It’s as if he’s trying to convey, “I’m not one of those rough guys,” but his challenge is implicit in his words: “Can you handle a drink with me?”, or “I apologize, but this is too intense for someone who isn’t genuine enough.”
Internet celebrity Andrew Tate has stirred up quite a storm of controversy in recent years. Given his actions, it’s not surprising. Known for expressing misogynistic views and being labeled as the “epitome of harmful masculinity,” Tate is now a familiar face among far-right groups. At present, he is under multiple legal investigations, one of which involves human trafficking and allegations of rape. It’s challenging to think of a more fitting muse for McAvoy’s horror movie antagonist…
Speak No Evil Is Due to Hit Theaters Next Week
In a charming countryside home, the chilling narrative of “Speak No Evil” unfolds. James McAvoy, along with Andrew Tate, engaged in some rural activities with Paddy, drawing inspiration from an Australian term that connotes harmful masculinity. Notably, their roles were preceded by captivating characters portrayed by the exceptionally skilled actors Mark Rylance and Ray Winstone.
“For your request of something slightly rural in theme, I drew inspiration from two distinct visual references. The initial one is the term ‘bogan’, often used in Australia and connected to a specific type of masculinity that might be considered toxic. My second source of inspiration was the character Rooster, portrayed exceptionally by Mark Rylance in Jerusalem.”
Despite his tough, macho demeanor and dominant behavior, there’s a subtle softness to him, reminiscent of Ray Winstone’s character in Sexy Beast. He exudes an air of self-assured confidence that comes from being completely at ease with himself, as if he might say, ‘I don’t mind if my belly sticks out because I am that comfortable a man.’
