As a dedicated cinephile with decades of film-watching under my belt, I must confess that the prospect of Marvel Studios rebooting the X-Men franchise has me both excited and apprehensive. The X-Men series holds a special place in my heart, with James McAvoy‘s portrayal of Charles Xavier being one of the standout performances across the rebooted franchise. However, as much as I’d love to see him back in action leading the iconic mutant team, it seems that ship has sailed, and we’ll be seeing someone else play the role “imminently… without me.
Following the joint venture of Deadpool and Wolverine in revamping Fox’s X-Men universe, James McAvoy, who portrayed a younger Charles Xavier, has made it clear that he won’t reprise his role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). An X-Men movie is underway at Marvel Studios, with Michael Lesslie handling the scriptwriting. At this point, it remains unclear whether the casting approach will involve a blend of familiar faces and newcomers or if the MCU’s X-Men will mark a clean slate. For now, we are left guessing about the direction Marvel Studios might take. However, McAvoy has expressed certainty that he won’t be asked to reprise his role as the character.
In an interview with BuzzFeed UK to publicize his upcoming horror film “Speak No Evil”, James McAvoy hinted at the possibility, or lack thereof, of his return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. When asked about how he injects his own character into his roles, making it difficult for others to fill those parts, McAvoy humbly accepted the compliment but playfully suggested that other actors may take over the roles of Mr. Tumnus in Narnia and Charles Xavier in the future.
I fondly recall the moment when James McAvoy stepped into the role of Charles Xavier in “X-Men: Days of Future Past,” effectively restarting the X-Men saga with a younger ensemble. Although the subsequent X-Men films garnered varying opinions from both critics and audiences, McAvoy’s portrayal of Professor X remained an enduring highlight throughout the rebooted series. Regrettably, as Marvel Studios search for their next Professor X, it appears that we won’t be seeing McAvoy reprising his role as the charismatic leader of the mutant team once more. He himself stated:
“They’re both getting remade… imminently… without me.”
Who Could Play the MCU’s New X-Men?
Information about Marvel Studios’ upcoming X-Men film remains scarce, and speculation swirls around its possible cast – a secret that could rival the most secure vault within Marvel lore. Unlike earlier MCU productions such as The Avengers, which introduced us to Marvel Comics’ lesser-known heroes who later gained global recognition, the X-Men already boast a substantial screen presence due to their longstanding popularity.
It seems extremely challenging to satisfy every X-Men fan with the latest casting choices due to differing opinions. While some fans desire a brand new set of characters, others hope for Marvel Studios to rehire the original actors, but this option appears quite improbable. Consequently, numerous contrasting fan suggestions have appeared on the internet. As for Professor X, Mark Strong, Ralph Fiennes, and Ewan McGregor are currently leading contenders among fans to portray the character in the MCU.
The much contested fan speculation centers on everyone’s beloved X-Men character, Wolverine, following the release of Deadpool & Wolverine. Fans are eagerly wishing that Hugh Jackman might continue playing the role until he reaches the age of 90. The highly successful film also provided Henry Cavill with an opportunity to portray a superhero, even if it was only for a short while. As is customary among fans, they now desire more, hoping Cavill will reprise his role and secure a larger screen presence in Marvel’s X-Men movie, affectionately dubbed the ‘Cavillerine’.
