As a seasoned movie enthusiast with a soft spot for edge-of-your-seat thrillers, I can hardly contain my excitement over the upcoming release of “Speak No Evil” on Peacock! Having had my fair share of sleepless nights thanks to films that keep me guessing till the very end, this one seems like it’s right up my alley.
The chilling thriller titled “Speak No Evil” (often referred to as “The Nightmare Weekend”) is set to make its debut on Peacock, with the James McAvoy-led production scheduled for release exclusively on the NBCUniversal streaming service on Friday, December 6.
The upcoming film, supported by Blumhouse Productions and sharing the same title as its 2022 Danish counterpart, boasts a rating of 84% on Rotten Tomatoes. This suspenseful movie focuses on the Dalton family from America – Ben (Scott McNairy), Louise (Mackenzie Davis), and Agnes (Alix West Lefler) – who unwittingly accept an invitation to vacation in the English countryside with a deceptive, abusive group. At first, Paddy (McAvoy) and his wife Ciara (Aisling Franciosi) appear kind and welcoming, but their true nature is gradually revealed as sinister secrets surface around them and their silent son Ant (Dan Hough). By the time the Dalton family realizes they’ve been violating an unspoken social contract of human decency, it’s too late, as they’ve already gone beyond the point of no return.
According to writer-director James Watkins, the movie is centered around the idea of refraining from actions due to polite facades. However, when situations escalate into overt violence, he believes that the usual rules no longer apply. Instead, it becomes like the Wild West or caveman times. The film aims to delve into what happens when civilization crumbles and we observe how civilized individuals react when faced with violence. This dynamic is drastically distinct.
He added: “I wanted to make a film that’s stressful fun, I suppose. I think humor works, not just as humor, but as a way of scratching away at some of the cringe of the stressors. It’s funny watching people struggling. You know, Ricky Gervais has made a career out of it in a brilliant way about social awkwardness.”
