James Taylor, Mickey Guyton and Jason Isbell Set to Perform During DNC Opening Night in Chicago

As a longtime follower of music and politics, I couldn’t be more thrilled about the lineup for the Democratic National Convention! The combination of James Taylor, Mickey Guyton, and Jason Isbell performing on Monday night is absolutely stellar. Each artist brings their unique style and passion to the table, and their activism and dedication to causes they care about align perfectly with the “For the People” theme of the convention.

On Monday evening in Chicago, the Democratic National Convention will provide some musical entertainment for the public.

Renowned artists James Taylor, Mickey Guyton from country music, and Jason Isbell in the folk/Americana genre have been confirmed to perform at the United Center as part of the opening night of a four-day event. This event, titled “For the People,” is being organized by convention officials, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Previously mentioned, the schedule for Monday includes a keynote speech by President Joe Biden, along with comments from several prominent political figures and members of the Biden family such as Dr. Jill Biden, Ashley Biden, former First Lady and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Representative Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez, Mayor Brandon Johnson of Chicago, Governor Kathy Hochul of New York, Senator Raphael G. Warnock, and others.

It’s been reported that Taylor, a dedicated Democrat and activist who supported both Joe Biden and former President Barack Obama, will be the last act performing tonight. This performance will be a repeat of his appearance at the DNC stage. Back in 2012, he performed “Carolina In My Mind”, “You’ve Got a Friend” and “How Sweet It Is” from the Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte, North Carolina. Taylor has expressed his lifelong Democratic affiliation, stating, “I pay a lot of taxes, and I want a government that I paid for.” He feels as a citizen that he is obliged to respond when asked for support.

2024 DNC Hosts: Kerry Washington, Mindy Kaling, Tony Goldwyn, and Ana Navarro will take turns hosting the event on different nights. Each celebrity will deliver opening remarks and make appearances at various points during each evening. Here’s the schedule:

Originally hailing from Massachusetts and nurtured in North Carolina, Grammy Award-winning artist Taylor has a track record of activism that led him to perform on stages for causes he passionately supports, as well as endorsing Democratic political figures such as Biden, Obama, and Clinton. He appeared at various campaign events for Obama and sang “America the Beautiful” during his second inauguration in 2013. Lately, Taylor has been vocal about supporting President Biden’s re-election bid, although he eventually decided to step down from the current campaign.

In relation to this, it’s anticipated that Isbell, who has numerous tour dates lined up with his band the 400 Unit for the remainder of the year, will perform his track “Something More Than Free.” Earlier reports suggested his involvement after a sort of leak. During CNN’s live broadcast from their DNC booth, Isbell’s soundcheck was audible and his image appeared on the screens. The outspoken Grammy Award-winner expressed support for Biden when he dropped out of the race by posting on Threads, “At last, someone demonstrates integrity and thoughtfulness towards the American people.”

As Guyton prepares for the launch of her upcoming album, “House on Fire,” set to drop on September 27th, she is releasing a new single entitled “My Side of the Country” this Friday. Her participation in the DNC events underscores the emergence of a prosperous Black female artist who has carved out her own path in the traditionally male-dominated country music scene.

“She expressed that it’s crucial to amplify the untold stories of various groups, including women, Black women, indigenous peoples, Latinx individuals, and those identifying within the LGBTQIA+ community. In her view, failing to provide a platform for these voices is fundamentally unfair. This belief stems from recognizing that there’s a young girl, around 7 years old, who shares similarities with herself, harboring dreams. When she doesn’t see someone like herself represented, she may not be encouraged to chase those dreams and might miss out on the life that could have been her destiny.”

In August 2024, the Democratic National Convention (DNC) will be held in Chicago, Illinois, where Democrats from across the United States and its territories will gather from the 19th to the 22nd. The main events will take place at the United Center, while other activities will occur at McCormick Place Convention Center. This event is a joint effort between the Democratic National Committee, the Chicago host committee, the City of Chicago, and the State of Illinois. It’s predicted that approximately 50,000 people will attend, including 5,000 delegates, alternates, and 15,000 media members, as they rally for Kamala Harris in her quest to become President alongside Vice Presidential candidate Tim Walz.
