As a seasoned gamer of life and art, I eagerly anticipate the upcoming exhibition by James Turrell at Almine Rech Paris. With three decades of his work gracing their walls, it’s like a pilgrimage for me to witness yet another masterpiece from this luminary artist.
Beginning in October, Almine Rech Paris will reveal a fresh addition to James Turrell’s ongoing project, titled “Tall Glass / Wide Glass“. This announcement signifies the 12th showcase of Turrell’s work as an installation artist at the gallery over the past three decades.
Beyond a spacious or tall glass lies a state of evolution. The upcoming artwork expands upon the series’ twenty-year journey investigating elliptical and rectangular shapes within a distinctive opening. Spectators will experience a dreamscape of light and color, crafted from translucent materials that bend and sway throughout an hour, thanks to their delicate nature.
In contrast to earlier works in the series that had a neon tone, Turrell shifted towards exploring LED options since 2015. This change opened up a broader range of vibrant colors and light intensities, enabling more creative freedom when it comes to shaping and color choices. Reminiscent of his other celestial light installations, the pieces in this latest exhibition stimulate visual perception – a tribute to human sight.
In a prior statement, Turrell expressed that his work lacks a specific purpose, visual representation, or central point of interest. Without these elements, he invites the question: What are you observing? The essence of his work lies in evoking a sensation of thought devoid of words.
From October 14 through December 21, 2024, the upcoming exhibition will be displayed at Almine Rech Gallery in Paris.
