Horror TV shows are among the most challenging to create in a way that’s both impactful and enduring, as evidenced by the cancellation of the horror series produced by Ian McCulloch and James Wan, , on Peacock after only one season. Despite garnering numerous positive reviews and building a dedicated fanbase, the show’s viewership apparently did not meet expectations, possibly due to the fact that it never ranked among the Top 10 on the streaming platform.
The TV series, derived from Robert McCammon’s novel “Stinger”, was created for Peacock by showrunner McCulloch and the Atomic Monster production company led by Wan. The show’s narrative goes like this: “A diverse assortment of individuals in rural Georgia need to unite against a puzzling danger to stay alive.” Starring Yvonne Strahovski from “The Handmaid’s Tale” and Scott Speedman from “Grey’s Anatomy”, the series seemed poised for success, and it indeed looked promising at its premiere in October 2024.
In Rotten Tomatoes, the consensus for the series is: “Teacup is both stylishly terrifying and emotionally resonant, albeit with a few narrative leaks. The chilling horror elements of this show leave viewers with a satisfyingly eerie feeling.” This sentiment is mirrored in the 77% Tomatometer score and an almost identical 70% Popcornmeter score. Amidst a sea of movies and TV shows that struggle to find common ground between critics and audiences, the unified response from both groups makes the potential cancellation all the more difficult for fans to accept.
‘Teacup’ Opened Strong, Leaving Many Hoping for Season 2
Although Teacup did not win universal acclaim and some viewers criticized it for reinforcing the notion that Hollywood lacks originality, most spectators found it intriguing enough to wish for another season. The series was described as both “moody and unsettling” by some critics, while others deemed it “flawed but enjoyable.” Regrettably, not enough viewers chose to tune in again, resulting in the show being canceled prematurely.
One of the spectators for the show turned out to be none other than renowned horror author Stephen King, who expressed high regard for the series prior to its release. On his Twitter platform, King voiced his opinions about it before its premiere, as follows:
If you’re a fan of shows like “FROM” or “LOST,” I believe you’ll find this new series intriguing. It’s characterized by an eerie, confined atmosphere, with elements that might provoke feelings of fear. Be cautious for the Gas Mask Man. Each episode is compact, and there’s no unnecessary content; it’s all action-packed and thrilling. (The series premieres on Peacock on October 10th)
In essence, King’s influence, often emphasized across his book covers, couldn’t draw a larger audience for the series this time. Maybe it was poor marketing, or perhaps the horror genre’s persistent underdog status, but ultimately, Peacock executives viewed Teacup as more empty than full. Right now, only the first and sole season can be streamed on their platform.
