Jamie Foxx to Star in Netflix’s ‘Fight for ’84’ About U.S. Olympic Boxing Team Tragedy

Jamie Foxx is ready to take a swing at an emotional story from American sports history.

During a recent presentation, Netflix revealed that the noted actor has been chosen to lead in director Andrés Baiz’s upcoming dramatic film titled “Fight for ’84“. The screenplay for this project is attributed to Andrea Berloff, John Gatins, and Andy Weiss.

The movie titled Fight for ’84 unfolds following the devastating airplane accident that claimed the lives of the U.S. Olympic boxing team in 1980. In this story, Foxx’s character takes on the role of the coach handpicked to mentor a fresh team. Their ultimate goal: securing triumph at the 1984 Olympics, where they aimed to break records by winning the most boxing medals ever awarded in a Summer Games competition.

The production is handled by Eric Newman (Grand Electric), Bryan Unkeless (Night Owl), Foxx and Michael W. Abbott (A Move Films). Additionally, the executive producers are Henry Tillman, Datari Turner, and Weiss (representing A WeBros Entertainment).

Baiz is recognized for his contributions to the Netflix shows such as Narcos, Narcos: Mexico, The Sandman, and Griselda. Among his directorial feature films, Pimpinero: Blood and Oil was recently debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival last year.

The project sees Foxx reconnecting with Netflix after the launch of their action-comedy film “Back in Action” earlier this year, where he shares screen time with Cameron Diaz. His more recent works also include Netflix productions like “They Cloned Tyrone” and “Day Break”, as well as “The Burial” on Amazon and Marvel’s “Spider-Man: No Way Home”.

In the past, Foxx has delved into the world of boxing. He played Drew Bundini Brown, a team member of Muhammad Ali portrayed by Will Smith in the 2001 film “Ali,” directed by Michael Mann.
