Jamie Lee Curtis’ ‘Freaky Friday’ Tops Disney+ Charts Before Sequel Release

It’s quite unexpected, but it turns out that the classic movie “Freaky Friday,” starring Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan, has made a comeback on Disney+ streaming charts. This renewed popularity comes just before the anticipated sequel hits theaters in August. The new film promises an even more unusual twist – a truly “Freakier Friday.” In preparation for the upcoming movie, it seems that Disney fans are getting ready to experience the body-swap comedy all over again, directed by Mark Waters in 2003.

22 years post its initial cinema debut, “Freaky Friday” has reclaimed popularity, securing a notable position on the Disney+ streaming rankings in the U.S. As I write this, the film is nestled comfortably at the #7 spot, sandwiched between Marvel Cinematic Universe’s “Spider-Man: Homecoming” at #6 and “Avengers: Age of Ultron” at #8. Remarkably, seven out of the Top 10 titles on this list are Marvel films or TV series, making “Freaky Friday” a noticeable exception in a sea of superheroes.

While it may not be a freshly released blockbuster, Freaky Friday has proven to be quite popular on streaming platforms, much like the enduring character of the Cryptkeeper. It appears that viewers have taken a liking to the humorous escapades of Curtis’ Tess Coleman and Lohan’s Anna Coleman, portraying a mother-daughter duo who undergo an unusual turn of events, swapping bodies and embarking on each other’s lives. The film earned over $160 million at the global box office, surpassing its production budget of $26 million, and garnered praise from critics.

The Sequel to ‘Freaky Friday’ Promises an Even ‘Freakier Friday’

Disney announced in May 2023 that a new installment of “Freaky Friday” was underway, with both Curtis and Lohan returning to their iconic roles. Further details about the title and storyline were shared at D23 in August of the next year. The upcoming movie, named “Freakier Friday,” will follow Tess and Anna years after their identity swap incident. Now, Anna has a daughter and a stepdaughter-to-be, and as they deal with the complexities of blending families, Tess and Anna find out that the same magical circumstances might occur again.

Alongside Curtis and Lohan, various familiar faces from the first film reprise their roles such as Mark Harmon, Chad Michael Murray, Christina Vidal Mitchell, Haley Hudson, Lucille Soong, Stephen Tobolowsky, and Rosalind Chao. Newcomers Julia Butters, Sophia Hammons, and Maitreyi Ramakrishnan have also been added to the cast. Notably, Manny Jacinto, who gained recognition through his work in The Good Place and The Acolyte, is also part of this ensemble, and it seems he will be taking on a significant role that could potentially stir intrigue among fans of the 2003 film.

There’s still ample time left in the calendar to plan a re-watch of the movie “Freaky Friday,” streaming on Disney+, prior to the release of “Freakier Friday” in theaters on August 8th.
