Japanese Breakfast Release New Album ‘For Melancholy Brunettes (& Sad Women)’

After a four-year hiatus, Japanese Breakfast, led by Michelle Zauner, has returned with their fourth album titled “For Melancholy Brunettes (& sad women)“, which was officially released this past Friday.

After the highly praised “Jubilee,” which marked a significant success for Japanese Breakfast, comes “For Melancholy Brunettes.” This project garnered Grammy nominations for Michelle Zauner as Best New Artist and Best Alternative Music Album at the 64th Grammys in 2022.

Back in January, Zauner unveiled her upcoming album, simultaneously releasing its first single titled “Orlando In Love”. A month after, she followed up with another single entitled “Mega Circuit”. Notably, Blake Mills, who has worked on tracks for artists like Fiona Apple, Perfume Genius, Dawes, Alabama Shakes, among others, was the one who produced this project.

To mark the launch of their new album, Japanese Breakfast are performing a fully booked concert at El Museo Del Barrio in New York this coming Saturday. After that, they will embark on a tour to promote the album, starting with performances at Coachella for the first time since 2022 next month.

Beyond her work in music, Zauner also released her critically acclaimed memoir “Crying in H Mart” in 2021, which later gained interest for a movie adaptation. The same year, director Will Sharpe from the series “White Lotus” was announced to helm the project. However, Zauner recently shared that Sharpe is no longer attached to the film and the project appears to be on hold for now.

She said, “Right now, I’m focusing on other creative projects, so the film will have to wait.”
