Japanese-Meets-Californian Modernism in Matsuri's New Restaurant Interior

As a dedicated fan of Japanese cuisine and interior design, I was absolutely thrilled when I heard about Matsuri’s rebranding and new interior design at their restaurant on rue Victor Hugo in Paris. The moment I stepped inside, I was taken aback by the stunning fusion of futuristic canteen and nostalgic aesthetics.

At Matsuri’s renovated eatery on rue Victor Hugo in Paris’s 16th district, renowned designer Rudy Guénaire has unveiled an impressive interior makeover. The revamped 200-square-meter setting invites diners to experience Japanese cuisine in a modern, futuristic canteen. Nostalgia and progressive design elements harmoniously blend, creating an unforgettable dining atmosphere.

In the center of the restaurant, a conveyor belt called kaiten showcases an assortment of freshly prepared Californian Rolls. Diners sit facing this moving feast, their seats modern and stable interpretations of Izakaya design. The furniture draws inspiration from Californian Modernism, conveying a vintage feel. As this design trend was popular in Japan during the mid-20th century as well, the overall ambiance harmoniously blends nostalgic Eastern and Western décor styles.

As I step into this gaming den after sunset, I’m struck by the unique ambiance. Above me, rows of thick polycarbonate rectangles form a ceiling, reminiscent of the iconic neon-lit scenes from Blade Runner. The soft, warm glow emitted by these lights bathes the rough concrete walls in a sunset-like hue. Decorating these walls are vintage Japanese posters, adding an extra layer to this immersive experience. This thoughtfully designed interior transports me to a dreamlike fusion of past and present.
