As a longtime fan of action movies and a frequent flyer myself, I can’t help but feel a sense of excitement and anticipation for the upcoming Netflix release, “Carry-On”. The stellar cast, led by Jason Bateman and Taron Egerton, promises an adrenaline-pumping ride that takes us behind the scenes of airport security in a way we’ve never seen before.
On Thursday evening, the main actors from the Netflix airport action-thriller titled “Carry-On” made an appearance at the Egyptian Theater. There, they eagerly witnessed their freshly released movie soar on the red carpet premiere.
At the event, Jason Bateman, portraying a secretive character trying to extort a TSA agent into permitting a risky package onto a Christmas Eve flight, discussed his character’s unique angle. “I’m not your stereotypical tough-looking criminal type,” he shared with The Hollywood Reporter, “so I’m happy they didn’t want me to play him that way. They allowed me to depict him as an ordinary individual, and this is simply his occupation. He wants to destroy the plane, transition to the next target, and return home for the holidays as well.
Taron Egerton, who portrays the diligent TSA agent aiming to foil Bateman’s character, acknowledged that the movie’s antagonist was an unanticipated twist from the usual. “He appears harmless, but beneath the surface, he’s truly reprehensible,” Egerton stated, further mentioning that acting alongside Bateman was a long-held dream. “Given Jason’s extensive film career and roles in ‘Arrested Development’ and ‘Ozark,’ it feels almost unreal to be working with him.
That night brought together the cast of the movie, featuring Danielle Deadwyler, Dean Norris, Sinqua Walls, Theo Rossi, and Sofia Carson.
Carson, clad in a striking black Dolce & Gabbana evening gown, expressed her delight at taking on the role of Nora, who is the girlfriend of Egerton’s character and an airport employee. She found the character appealing because it presented a unique portrayal of a strong female figure. “I was thrilled to be cast as a woman in an action movie that never once required me to be in distress,” she shared. “I felt honored to breathe life into such a character, and to do so alongside Jason Bateman, Taron Egerton, Danielle Deadwyler, and under the guidance of none other than Steven Spielberg – a dream come true for me.
Making the movie “Carry-On” wasn’t without its difficulties, especially in converting an old airport in New Orleans into a convincing stand-in for LAX. Producer Dylan Clark commended the team’s resourcefulness, stating that the project required both an excellent director and a top-notch crew to pull off successfully. The film is directed by Jaume Collet-Serra and written by T.J. Fixman.
During the holiday season’s release, Rossi expressed his hope that the film would provide a unique insight into the challenging and frequently misconstrued role of TSA agents. He stated, “The movie provides a glimpse behind the scenes, allowing you to develop empathy for their experiences and understand how tough their jobs truly are.” Rossi further added, “If we could achieve this with more aspects of life, I believe our comprehension of people’s roles would significantly improve.
Bateman, whose mother used to be a flight attendant, mused on the changes in airport security throughout the years. “It’s quite efficient now,” he said. “To put it simply, it’s far more challenging for my character to attempt what he once did when I was traveling with my mom compared to today. The security measures are really impressive these days.
Regarding comparisons drawn with another cherished holiday action-thriller, “Die Hard”, Egerton embraced the similarities. “This film brought on a festive feeling – that’s what I aim for it to evoke. ‘Die Hard’ is a Christmas movie. This is a Christmas movie too. I hope audiences enjoy it just as much.
Carry-On starts streaming on Netflix on Dec. 13.
