Jason Bourne is emptying out his safe deposit box on the Universal lot.
As a devoted fan, I’m thrilled to share that the literary empire built by Robert Ludlum, including his iconic spy franchise and the entirety of his works, is being shopped for film adaptations by WME, acting as representatives for the esteemed author’s estate. This move promises exciting new stories from the world of one of my favorite authors!
The objective is to locate a fresh setting for the franchise and increase the frequency of the superspy’s screen appearances. The character of Bourne was last seen approximately a decade ago in the movie “Jason Bourne” (2016), produced by Universal and Captivate Entertainment, who oversee the film rights for the Ludlum estate. At this point, it remains uncertain if Matt Damon, our long-standing lead actor, will be part of the upcoming adaptation.
It’s reported that Skydance, Apple, and Netflix have held discussions regarding acquiring the rights. Universal also has a chance of regaining the rights if they make an appealing offer.
Jason Bourne was born from the imagination of author Ludlum, who penned the novel “The Bourne Identity” in 1980. Two decades later, actor Damon and director Liman brought him to life on the big screen with the 2002 film “The Bourne Identity”. This movie, released a few years before Daniel Craig’s gritty reinterpretation of James Bond in “Casino Royale”, marked the beginning of a new trend in spy films that prioritized realism over high-tech devices.
Two sequels, “The Bourne Ultimatum” (2004) and “The Bourne Supremacy” (2007), were born from Ludlum’s novels. Later, Universal expanded the series with Jeremy Renner portraying a new character in “The Bourne Legacy” (2012). However, this spin-off didn’t last. Matt Damon made a comeback a few years later with “Jason Bourne,” which grossed an impressive $415 million worldwide.
The “Bourne” series takes a new turn amidst an escalating scramble for intellectual property, where the number of available assets is rapidly diminishing. Lately, Amazon has gained ownership rights over the James Bond franchise from producers Barbara Brocoli and Michael G. Wilson.
Over the past few years, Universal had considered reviving the Bourne series, with director Edward Berger, known for Conclave, brought onboard towards the end of 2023 to reimagine a fresh approach. However, this project didn’t progress swiftly enough and has now been shelved.
