Although Jason Isaacs is currently garnering acclaim for his role in Season 3 of “White Lotus,” it’s hard not to remember his captivating portrayal of Lucius Malfoy, the Death Eater wizard, in the “Harry Potter” films. The aristocratic demeanor and imposing delivery he brought to the character sends shivers down my spine even now. With a “Harry Potter” TV series in development for your Max subscription, Isaacs has an intriguing choice for who should play the villainous wizard. I must admit, I’d love to see this casting decision come true.
While Jason Isaacs didn’t get a lot of screen time in the Harry Potter movies, he still managed to give a memorable performance as Lucius Malfoy. His cold, hard stare into the camera and his authoritative voice when conjuring up evil spells showed you exactly where Draco got his arrogance and bleach-blond locks from. Considering how iconic Isaacs’ role was as Lucius, it’s hard to picture anyone else donning the long blonde wig. However, Variety asked The Patriot actor who he’d pick as his antagonist character in the upcoming Harry Potter series, and here was his wild answer:
Meryl Streep. She can do anything, that woman. There’s literally no limit to what she can do.
Meryl Streep has demonstrated her versatility by playing some of the best female villains in film history, such as Miranda Priestly in “The Devil Wears Prada” and a wicked witch in “Into the Woods”. As Jason Isaacs pointed out, she can truly play any role. I’m curious to see Streep don a long blonde wig and deliver that iconic sneer reminiscent of Lucius Malfoy when things don’t go his way. It’s worth noting that Streep has even portrayed a man in the HBO miniseries “Angels in America”, where she was virtually unrecognizable. So, it wouldn’t be too much to imagine her convincingly playing the role of a spoiled pureblood wizard.
Meryl Streep truly stands out as an exceptional actress who consistently delivers top-notch performances. Her talent lies in her remarkable ability to embody each character’s diverse emotions, gestures, and subtle nuances with incredible precision, much like a sponge absorbing water. Whether it’s making you shed tears in ‘Kramer Vs. Kramer’, causing laughter in ‘Florence Foster Jenkins’, or stirring anger in ‘The Devil Wears Prada’, Streep has the unique ability to evoke a wide range of emotions from her audience. She is not only proficient in various accents, but also sings and dances exceptionally well. Her versatility extends across multiple genres, making it seem as though there’s nothing she can’t or won’t attempt.
The actors from the Harry Potter movie franchise have shared their ideas about the upcoming HBO series. Daniel Radcliffe suggests that producers should ensure the young actors in the new cast behave naturally like children. Bonnie Wright advises the Max cast to consider their character interpretations thoughtfully. Jason Isaacs, on the other hand, doesn’t offer advice for the new show, preferring to let it stand on its own merits.
I’d offer no guidance whatsoever as it seems unnecessary. I’m familiar with a few of the potential cast members who are exceptional talents. The production promises to be remarkable, and frankly, I don’t think my outdated wisdom would add much value to their already stellar efforts.
It appears to me that Jason Isaacs is confident in the new Harry Potter crew, as he believes they’re capable of handling things appropriately. Notably, John Lithgow from 3rd Rock From the Sun has been officially cast as Dumbledore, a role that seems tailored for him, given his ability to convey the gentle authority and warmth needed for The Boy Who Lived. Moreover, there are rumors about potential candidates for Snape and Professor McGonagall roles.
In the upcoming production, Paapa Essiedu from “Gangs of London” is nearly securing a deal for the role that was previously held by Janet McTeer in “Slytherin” and “Kaos.” It’s rumored that McTeer could take on the famous part once played by Maggie Smith. The young actors who will fill out the iconic trio are yet to be chosen, with countless kids auditioning. I can’t wait to discover which of these budding talents will embody the enchanting roles we hold dear.
With a dash of audacity that’s reminiscent of Jason Isaacs’ fan casting, suggesting Meryl Streep play Lucius Malfoy is quite an intriguing thought. An Academy Award-winning actress known for her versatility, much like a chameleon on the silver screen, she could certainly bring a unique flair to the villainous Death Eater role. It’s an interesting twist of fate that we might witness in HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series, tentatively scheduled for premiere in 2026, where talented actors will undoubtedly raise their wands to bring these beloved characters to life.
