Jason Momoa has moved on to another video game-based project following the tremendous box office success of “The Minecraft Film” in 2025. With a domestic earnings of over $417 million and a global total of more than $930 million, “Minecraft” became the most successful domestic release that year. Despite mixed reviews from critics, audiences, particularly younger ones who respond with excitement and popcorn tossing whenever Jack Black says phrases like “Chicken jockey” or “Flint and steel“, seem to appreciate it. The film also features Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks, Jennifer Coolidge, and Sebastian Eugene Hansen alongside Momoa.
In the world of Minecraft, Momoa portrays Garret “The Garbage Man” Garrison, a once-acclaimed video game champion now managing a dilapidated gaming store. Although Momoa is a key character in the film, Black’s portrayal of Steve, the immature grown-up who roams freely across the Overworld, steals the limelight. The Minecraft Movie may receive a follow-up, but sources suggest that Momoa has another video game movie on his plate as he is in negotiations for a role in an upcoming Street Fighter live-action film.
Jason Momoa Is Doing A Street Fighter Video Game Movie After Minecraft’s Success
The Aquaman Star Already Has Plans To Star In Another Popular Video Game Franchise
As reported by Deadline, Jason Momoa is being considered for a role in the upcoming Street Fighter movie from Legendary. Alongside him are actors such as Andrew Koji, Noah Centineo, and Roman Reigns who are also under discussion for the video game adaptation. Katao Sakurai, director of Bad Trip, is set to direct this film which is inspired by the Capcom fighting series, famous for characters like Ryu, Chun-Li, Ken, and M. Bison. This upcoming movie marks the third live-action adaptation of the series, following 1994’s Street Fighter and 2009’s Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li.
The storyline and character Momoa will portray in the movie are yet to be revealed since it’s still in its preliminary stages. There’s a whisper that Momoa might embody Blanka, but with the Street Fighter series boasting numerous characters, there will probably be more casting news. This project marks another significant franchise for Momoa, who has starred in the DC Universe, Fast & Furious, Dune, and Game of Thrones. However, none of his forthcoming roles can surpass the box office success of A Minecraft Movie, which has grossed nearly $1 billion globally.
Jason Momoa Replacing Minecraft With Street Fighter Would Be Risky
Street Fighter May Not Perform As Well As A Minecraft Movie
The Street Fighter series, a well-known and highly profitable video game franchise, doesn’t automatically lead to box office success when adapted into films. For instance, Street Fighter competes with the Mortal Kombat series. The 2021 movie based on Mortal Kombat earned $84 million globally, although it was also available on HBO Max and released during the pandemic. Nevertheless, there’s less interest in fighter video game movies compared to those based on Minecraft.
Movies based on popular video games that deliver impressive performances tend to resonate with both children who grew up playing these games and adults reminiscing about their past. For instance, films like “Sonic the Hedgehog” and “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” have proven successful at the box office, and a “Minecraft Movie” is set to join them. However, while “Street Fighter” has some adult appeal, it’s not as popular among kids. As for the actor with Momoa, he might find even greater success if he reprised his role in a sequel of “Minecraft.
Street Fighter Gives Jason Momoa A Bigger Video Game Future Than Minecraft
Momoa Could Have A Bigger Role In Street Fighter Than A Minecraft Movie
In the conclusion of the Minecraft Movie, I found myself looking forward to a promising future for Momoa’s character. After reopening his video game store and forging a strong connection with Steve, portrayed by Black, there seems to be a bright path ahead. That being said, Garrett is not a character from the video games, and it appears that Steve was the standout favorite in this film. With the sequel on the horizon, it’s possible that Garrett may take a backseat to focus more on Steve and other video game characters like Alex, who was hinted at in the movie’s post-credit scene.
As a passionate moviegoer, I find it plausible that Jason Momoa could secure a meatier role in the upcoming Street Fighter film, considering his aptitude for portraying characters from gaming worlds. Given that Blanka is one of the characters he might embody, this project seems tailor-made for him, as it aligns perfectly with his action hero background and allows him to thrive in such an environment rather than, say, a Minecraft movie which might not provide the same level of opportunity. Although a Minecraft film may generate more revenue, Street Fighter presents Momoa with a more compelling chance to spearhead a video game franchise.
