As a gamer who’s seen his fair share of life and death situations in virtual worlds, I can confidently say that Shrinking Season 2 has hit a nerve. It’s not often you find a show that tackles heavy topics like death, grief, and family drama with such a deft hand, yet manages to keep the audience laughing.
Heads up, fellow gamers! I don’t want to ruin the fun if you haven’t seen it yet, but here come some spoilers for Season 2 of Shrinking. If you’re not all caught up, no worries! You can always stream the series on Apple TV+. Happy gaming and binge-watching!
Discussing death isn’t simple, and the second season of ‘Shrinking’ focuses on this aspect quite deeply. Unlike the first season which revolved around Jimmy rediscovering himself following his wife’s demise, the second installment brings into play the person responsible for her death – a drunk driver. This new character presents numerous hurdles for Jason Segel‘s persona, most notably when he must confront the challenging task of explaining everything to his daughter Alice.
Indeed, in an unexpectedly amusing manner, Jimmy discloses to his daughter that the driver arrived at his office. This scene, remarkably humorous yet poignant, stands out in the series. When I spoke with Jason Segel about his upcoming project on the 2024 TV schedule and this heartfelt father-daughter moment, he explained why it showcases the show’s ability to blend comedy and drama, stating:
That is a really good example of what I think is really great about the show, all modesty aside, is that we’re dealing with pretty big and heavy issues at times, but we always do it through the lens of how clumsy it ends up being in real life, you know?
Life is clumsy, and this scene illustrates that perfectly and hilariously.

In the heart of the latest episode, I found myself wrestling with a tough dilemma – how to share the news about the drunk driver who took my mom’s life, a character portrayed by Brett Goldstein from ‘Shrinking’. After some internal struggle, I mustered the strength to confront Alice. But oh boy, the timing couldn’t have been worse! Lukita Maxwell’s character was basking in joy over passing her driving test when I decided to bring up our shared loss. The conversation was awkwardly punctuated with a discussion about our deceased loved ones.
As a car enthusiast, I can’t help but recall an incident involving your mother and a vehicle. Oh dear me, oh bother!
Alice: What?
Jimmy: I apologize, but I couldn’t find a solution. That wasn’t the right approach. Honey, the person who was involved in the accident with your mother visited my office.
Later, the scene concludes as Derek playfully comments from his balcony, “By the way, how about cars?” This prompts Jimmy to become agitated and react with bouncing around and throwing a fit, expressing his annoyance about being watched by his neighbor.
In essence, the entire scenario carries a unique blend of humor and sadness, which is essentially the crux of the storyline in “Shrinking”. Segel expanded on this theme, stating:
In a similar vein, everyday conversations can be as theatrical and unpredictable as a scene from a play. You gather your courage to express yourself, only to stumble over your words, just when the phone interrupts with a ring in the middle of your speech. This mirrors the awkwardness and unscripted nature of real life. Consequently, I believe that we all strive to capture this clumsiness and spontaneity in our writing.
The Shrinking cast is made up of brilliant dramatic and comedic actors, and they’re able to handle issues like death, grief, medical issues, family drama, marriage and more with humor and heart.
Initially, you might not anticipate a series where primary figures confront themes such as death, sorrow, Parkinson’s, and PTSD to be humorous. Yet, Shrinking stands out as one of the most hilarious shows on TV currently, as it skillfully captures life’s inherent awkwardness.
Achieving moments similar to what Segel and I discussed can be quite challenging, yet the result is truly spectacular, and this could be the reason why Shrinking has been renewed for a third season and is recognized as one of Apple TV+’s top-tier shows.
It’s intriguing to watch Jimmy and Alice as they cope with their loss and the person who caused it – their loved one’s driver. To catch up on how they handle this challenging situation, tune in to Shrinking each Wednesday, available exclusively on Apple TV+.
