As a seasoned gamer with a soft spot for indie films and a deep affection for Montreal’s vibrant music scene, I can’t help but feel a thrill of excitement at the news that Jay Baruchel has joined the cast of “Mile End Kicks.” Having grown up in Montreal myself, I remember the indie music scene of 2011 vividly and can only imagine the unique blend of humor, drama, and musical prowess that this film promises.
Actor Jay Baruchel has signed on for the lead role in director Chandler Levack’s upcoming romantic comedy titled “Mile End Kicks.” According to The Hollywood Reporter, Barbie Ferreira will also be starring in the movie.
In 2011, the story unfolds in Montreal’s independent music community where we meet Grace Pine (Ferreira), a 24-year-old music critic who relocates to Canada to pen a book on Alanis Morissette’s groundbreaking album “Jagged Little Pill”. However, her project takes an unforeseen twist as she develops romantic entanglements with the band members she manages as their publicist.
Mile End Kicks, a Canadian indie film by Rhombus Media, Zapruder Films, and Banner House Productions, reunites actor Baruchel with the production team from Blackberry. Baruchel previously starred in Matt Johnson’s story about the groundbreaking cell phone invention from Waterloo, Ontario, and the team of tech geniuses at Research in Motion who brought it to life.
The independent film features Devon Bostick, Stanley Simons, and Juliette Gariépy in its cast. Filming has recently concluded in Montreal. Notably, Levack is recognized for her first movie, “I Like Movies,” which had its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival.
Apart from her role as a film director, she previously critiqued music and films. The movie “Mile End Kicks” is produced by individuals including Matthew Miller, Pat Kiely, Niv Fichman, Kevin Krikst, Fraser Ash, Ferreira, Matt Johnson, Adrian Love, Olivia Nasner, Tim Ringuette, Haley Vickers, Tim Godsall and Ian Webb. Benji Weinstein, Todd Brown, and Nate Bolotin from XYZ Films serve as executive producers.
Variety was the first to report on Baruchel joining Mile End Kicks.
