Jay Leno Says 2024 Presidential Election Marked “a Great Day for Democracy”

As a long-time admirer of Jay Leno‘s wit and wisdom, I found his recent comments on CBS’ The Talk both insightful and refreshing. The former Tonight Show host, in his characteristic straightforward manner, praised the Nov. 5 election as “a great day for democracy.” Despite not being a fan of Donald Trump, he acknowledged the fairness of the process and expressed hope for unity moving forward.

Jay Leno isn’t a fan of Donald Trump, but he has positive words for Election Day overall.

On Wednesday, the previous host of The Tonight Show made an appearance on CBS’ daytime program, The Talk. During his visit, he expressed that the outcome of the November 5th presidential election was a significant victory for democracy.

“There was no cheating; everybody said it was honest,” he said.

Co-host Natalie Morales inquired from Leno about any memories he had from his stint as host of his late-night talk program on the day following a significant election.

He remarked, “Things were distinctly different back then.” He explained further, “You’d poke fun at everyone equally, which often led to displeased letters from various parties.” He went on to say, “Nowadays, it seems you must align with one side. It’s a bit of a shift, but what makes this election unique is its fairness. Although I wasn’t a supporter, that’s alright. It’s the President of the United States. Let’s all come together, thank you.

In 2009, President Barack Obama made an appearance on “The Tonight Show” with host Jay Leno, which was a first for a sitting U.S. president to appear on his program.

In a conversation on “The Talk”, Leno expressed his concern about potential name-calling and divisive actions following the November 5th election, where Donald Trump emerged as the president-elect, defeating Kamala Harris in the democratic race.

His stance was notably more hopeful compared to other Democratic figures in Hollywood, such as Billie Eilish and Christina Applegate, who expressed strong concerns about the state of women’s rights following the election. For instance, Eilish tweeted “This is a war on women,” while Applegate posted “Why? Give me your reasons why????? My child is sobbing because her rights as a woman may be taken away. Why?” John Cusack, in a since-deleted post, stated that the election of a convicted felon and self-proclaimed misogynist was a sign of deep nihilism and despair, going as far as to call it the country choosing to destroy itself.
