In a recent address, former actress-turned-politician Jaya Bachchan appealed to the government on Tuesday for compassion towards the film industry. As a representative of the Samajwadi Party, she expressed her worries during a question to Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman about the Union Budget 2025-2026. She claimed that certain government policies may be inadvertently harming Bollywood, suggesting that it could potentially be suffocated or even destroyed.
In her speech at Rajya Sabha on February 11, Jaya Bachchan asserted that the current government has overlooked the film industry and lamented that single-screen cinemas are closing down. She accused previous administrations of similar actions, but this time, she suggested, it’s been escalated to a new degree.
Bachchan stated that the film and entertainment industry has been completely overlooked and is primarily utilized for serving the government’s own interests.
As reported by India Today, the actress from Silsila expressed her concern, “Today, forget about GST; small theaters are closing down everywhere. People aren’t visiting movie theaters because everything has become so expensive. It seems like you want to completely eliminate this industry,” she added, emphasizing that it is only the film industry that bridges the entire world to India.
She went on to express, “I’m voicing the concerns of my film sector and humbly appealing to this assembly on behalf of the audio-visual field. I kindly ask for leniency towards them. It appears as if you aim to eliminate this industry. I implore you not to proceed with this action. Currently, your actions seem to encompass cinema as well.
The seasoned actress additionally reached out to Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman for assistance, proposing ideas to ensure the “survival of the industry” and emphasizing the urgency with which she took this matter.
The finance ministry has confirmed that popcorn sold individually will still be subject to a 5% GST tax, similar to restaurant services. However, if popcorn is included with a movie ticket as a package deal, it will be classified as a combined service. In such instances, the tax rate may range from 12% to 18%, with the main item (the movie ticket) determining the applicable GST.
In her professional life, Jaya Bachchan is set to appear in an upcoming film titled “Dil Ka Darwaaza Khol Na Darling,” which features Siddhant Chaturvedi and Wamiqa Gabbi as the main leads. This movie will be directed by Vikas Bahl.
