JD.com, a prominent e-commerce brand from China, has been ramping up its application of artificial intelligence technology. Recently, the company showcased this innovation by having an AI representation of its founder, Richard Liu Qiangdong, host two live-streaming sessions on Tuesday.
JD.com’s AI character, resembling ChatRhino – a large language model, mirrors technologies like ChatGPT. In contrast to this, Liu’s virtual representation mimicked his real-life habit of using gestures while talking. However, unlike in real life, the digital Liu mostly stuck to a prewritten script without engaging or responding to queries from the online spectators.
Although it had some drawbacks, the project managed to achieve success. The first live streams of the Avatar, showcasing consumer electronics and groceries, drew in over 20 million viewers in total.
JD.com announced that its artificial intelligence (AI) virtual hosts now support more than 4,000 brands, resulting in a 90% reduction in live-streaming costs previously incurred with human hosts. Moreover, the AI is capable of addressing approximately 70% of common queries during live broadcasts.
China is increasingly embracing virtual live-streamers who can work around the clock, as shown by JD.com’s campaign for major shopping events like Singles’ Day. The company’s recent actions, such as filing trademarks for Liu’s avatar, suggest that this innovation may significantly impact human live-streamers in the future.
