Legendary action movie star Jean-Claude Van Damme is back to his popular Kickboxer franchise with the reboot sequel titled “Kickboxer: Armageddon”. This upcoming martial arts flick promises to deliver the excitement that we’ve come to expect from B-movies of this genre. In “Kickboxer: Armageddon”, Van Damme will team up with action movie heavyweights like Scott Adkins, Alain Moussi, and Mark Dacascos. The film has recently been acquired for distribution in the U.S. and Canada by Warner Bros. Home Entertainment.
Regrettably, the release date for “Kickboxer: Armageddon” remains undisclosed at this time. However, now that distribution matters have been sorted out, we can expect more details to surface shortly. The director, Dimitri Logothetis, who rejuvenated the iconic action series with 2016’s “Kickboxer: Vengeance”, will return as the director for “Kickboxer: Armageddon”. Working alongside Jim McGrath, he co-wrote the script. Filming is expected to commence this spring, and here’s a glimpse of what to expect, courtesy of THR: [Synopsis of Kickboxer: Armageddon]
In the movie “Kickboxer: Armageddon,” the protagonist, Kurt (played by Moussi), embarks on a mission to discover who murdered his wife. He encounters Cesare (Adkins), a skilled martial artist and cult leader in the Thai underworld, and as events unfold, Kurt finds himself in a grueling battle that proves to be the greatest fight of his life.
The ‘Kickboxer’ Franchise Has Become a Who’s Who of Action Movie Stars
In the spirit of ’80s action flicks that originated with the groundbreaking “Kickboxer” in 1989, starring Jean-Claude Van Damme as Kurt Sloane on a quest for vengeance, I must express my admiration for this thrilling franchise. Over time, it has seen numerous sequels graced by different action movie titans. The latest reboot series kicked off in 2016 with “Kickboxer: Vengeance,” starring Alain Moussi as the new Sloane, who learns the art of war under Van Damme’s character, Master Durand. This modern take boasts an impressive cast including Dave Bautista, Gina Carano, and Georges St-Pierre. The following chapter, “Kickboxer: Retaliation” (2018), further expanded its roster with stars like Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson from “Game of Thrones,” Christopher Lambert from “Highlander,” and Mike Tyson.
The rebooted Kickboxer series has been lauded for preserving its B-movie allure while showcasing impressive physical stunts and exhilarating, well-executed fight scenes. Van Damme, in an interview with THR, shares his insights on what makes the world of Kickboxer timeless.
Many individuals often remark to me that those films seem outdated. I think I understand the reason behind this. It’s essentially about authenticity. If an actor is genuinely sincere in their role and truly believes in their part, coupled with all the martial arts displays, it enables the audience to overlook the subpar settings.
Beyond his roles in the “Kickboxer” series, Jean-Claude Van Damme has recently starred in the action movie sequel titled “Kill ‘Em All 2”. In this film, he plays a spy going up against a terrorist seeking revenge, while also featuring comedic elements. You can stream “Kill ‘Em All 2” on Netflix, and “The Gardener”, with its blend of action and comedy, is available for streaming on Prime Video.
