Jean Smart Returns to Broadway This Summer in One-Woman Show

Jean Smart will return to Broadway this summer in a one-woman show.

The talented lead actor of ‘Hacks’, who won an Emmy, is set to take the stage in the world debut of the dark comedy ‘Call Me Izzy’. This production, penned by Jamie Wax and helmed by Sarna Lapine, will kick off at Studio 54 from May 24th. The official opening night is scheduled for June 12th.

Call Me Izzy is scheduled for a 12-week run ending Aug. 17.

She’s a six-time Emmy winner, primarily recognized for her role as Deborah Vance in ‘Hacks’, but also for her performances in ‘Fraiser’ and ‘Samantha, Who?’. Notably, she has graced our screens on series like ‘Designing Women’ and ‘Mare of Easttown’, and has starred in films such as ‘Babylon’, ‘Wildflower’, and ‘Sweet Home Alabama’. Her theatrical debut was in the 1981 play ‘Piaf’ on Broadway, and she reprised her stage presence in a 2000 revival of ‘The Man Who Came to Dinner’, alongside Nathan Lane. For this performance, she earned a Tony nomination.

The play penned by Wax, a CBS News contributing correspondent as well as a playwright, is characterized as portraying a woman residing in rural Louisiana who conceals a secret that serves as her most valuable asset and her sole means of escape. Smart participated in rehearsals for the play’s developmental stage. Lapine previously helmed the Broadway revival of Sunday in the Park with George, featuring Jake Gyllenhaal and Annaleigh Ashford.

The production of the play is handled by Robert Ahrens and P3 Productions, which includes Ben Holtzman, Sammy Lopez, and Fiona Howe Rudin.

Additional creative team members will be announced at a later date.
