Jeff Goldblum Helps Actors Qualify for Health Insurance While Guest Hosting ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’

As a seasoned gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in virtual worlds, I can say that Jeff Goldblum‘s act of kindness is not just a role-play, but a real-life heroic quest. The struggle of actors to secure health insurance is akin to the grind for rare loot in my favorite MMORPGs – challenging, time-consuming, and often frustratingly out of reach.

During his guest appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on a Thursday, Jeff Goldblum assisted actors by providing them opportunities to earn towards SAG-AFTRA health insurance. He cast actors who required additional work, helping them meet the necessary earnings threshold.

In our world, we gotta earn a specific sum every year just to be eligible for health coverage through the Screen Actors Guild. It ain’t a walk in the park, that’s for sure. Sometimes we’re so close to the earnings limit that just one more role could get us there. Tonight, I’m proud to say, I’m giving a helping hand to some talented actors who are right on that edge by offering them roles in our show. Game on!

Next, Goldblum recruited actors who were nearly eligible for health insurance and just short of $500, to portray him. Each actor donned a suit similar to Goldblum’s and attempted their funniest imitation of the comedian.

Beginning in 2024, SAG-AFTRA artists usually need to earn a minimum of $27,000 from covered work or work on at least 104 days within a 12-month period to become eligible for health insurance benefits. Out of approximately 160,000 union members in 2023 (before the strike), around 25,000 met these criteria. Some actors who appeared on the show Thursday mentioned that they plan to use this coverage for things like a dermatologist’s skin examination and a root canal procedure.

Two nights ago, I found myself tuning into Jimmy Kimmel Live! for the second time where they’ve had actors join the show based on insurance reasons. A couple of years back, Kerry Washington graced our screens as a guest host under similar circumstances.
