As a fan who has grown up admiring Jenna Ortega‘s talents and watching her rise to fame, I can’t help but feel deeply saddened by the experiences she’s had to endure in this digital age. The fact that someone as young and promising as Jenna was forced to quit social media due to the vile harassment and AI-generated images is not only disappointing but also infuriating.

As I, Jenna Ortega, navigate my journey through Hollywood, I’ve come to a point where I had to make a difficult decision – stepping away from social media. My ascent has been swift and spectacular, with roles in “Scream” (2022) and “Wednesday” catapulting me into the limelight, and now preparing for the highly anticipated “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” in 2024.

As a budding actress who kicked off my journey at just nine years old, I was often counseled that social media could be a powerful asset in my acting career. I recall being told, “Girl, you gotta get on Twitter and craft your persona!” However, the first direct message I received from someone claiming to be a fan was far from pleasant – it was an uninvited image of a grown man’s private parts, sent when I was only 12 years old. Unfortunately, this wasn’t an isolated incident; the online harassment only escalated from there.

Her fame took a turn for the worse when she rose to superstardom. The actress disclosed that not only were personal photos of others being shared, but also AI-created images of herself, numerous of which were explicit.

Approximately two to three years back, following the release of the show, an influx of absurd pictures and images flooded my account, which left me in a state of confusion. Consequently, I decided to delete it as the content was disturbing and unpleasant. It made me feel uneasy. To put it simply, I couldn’t handle the content without feeling uncomfortable, so one day I just decided that I no longer needed it and chose to let go of it.

Over the past few years, there has been a substantial rise in the potential danger posed by AI to jobs and public figures, including celebrities. In the year 2023, Hollywood encountered a significant disruption when major unions established picket lines during discussions with studios over safeguards against using AI in movies and TV productions. This isn’t just about being supplanted by digitally-created characters on screen; actors need to be wary of other risks too. For instance, celebrities like Taylor Swift have found their likenesses misused in fake pornographic content created with deepfake technology.

Ortega confesses that she is afraid of future uses of the technology.

I hate AI. I mean, here’s the thing: AI could be used for incredible things. I think I saw something the other day where they were saying that artificial intelligence was able to detect breast cancer four years before it progressed. That’s beautiful. Let’s keep it to that. Did I like being 14 and making a Twitter account because I was supposed to and seeing dirty edited content of me as a child? No. It’s terrifying. It’s corrupt. It’s wrong.
