As a cinephile who’s been around the block more times than I care to admit, I must say that the upcoming psychological thriller, “Hurry Up Tomorrow,” starring The Weeknd, Jenna Ortega, and Barry Keoghan, has piqued my interest in a rather intriguing way. With Trey Edward Shults at the helm, this film promises to be a dark, twisted journey that will undoubtedly resonate with fans of The Weeknd’s music.
As a movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that I’ve just discovered Abel Tesfaye, famously known as The Weeknd, is stepping into the silver screen for the first time in the upcoming psychological thriller titled “Hurry Up Tomorrow”. Despite opinions about him from his role in HBO’s “The Idol”, it’s undeniable that this project, directed by Trey Edward Shults (who brought us “It Comes at Night”), is intriguing, especially with the star-studded cast including Jenna Ortega and Barry Keoghan. The best part? We don’t have to wait long as Lionsgate has scheduled a 2025 release date for “Hurry Up Tomorrow”. Can’t wait!
The movie titled “Hurry Up Tomorrow,” filled with music from the renowned artist The Weeknd, is set to debut on May 16, 2025. This announcement comes from Deadline. Notably, this film shares its name with The Weeknd’s upcoming album, which is expected around the same time. This release will serve as the final piece in a series that began with “After Hours” (2020) and “Dawn FM” (2022). Additionally, “Hurry Up Tomorrow” continues the narrative after The Weeknd’s HBO series, “The Idol.
According to an article in Los 40, Tesfaye described “Hurry Up Tomorrow” as the pinnacle of creativity within the project. This song functions as the third and concluding chapter, incorporating existential and self-referential themes, similar to those found in the latest visionary previews that have fans eagerly awaiting this final installment.
Tomorrow’s release is being spearheaded by The Weeknd’s production house, Manic Phase, in collaboration with Reza Fahim, the late Kevin Turen, and Harrison Kreiss. Overseeing the project are executive producers Ortega, Shults, Michael Rapino, Ryan Kroft, Wassim “Sal” Slaiby, and Harrison Huffman. Lionsgate, who have previously distributed films, will be managing global distribution for this movie, and they have even unveiled the film’s title design.
Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson stated:
Abel is a forward-thinking artist whose work transcends traditional boundaries. Together with Trey, he’s taking his musical realm to the silver screen with Hurry Up Tomorrow, a psychological thriller that promises to offer a unique cinematic journey for fans. We’re excited to share this creation with audiences globally.
The Weeknd and Trey Edward Shults: Masters of the Dark Arts
According to Fogelson’s observations, the collaboration between director Trey Edward Shults and The Weeknd could potentially be fruitful. Shults is a seasoned director in the genre realm, having previously led projects such as A24’s “It Comes At Night” and his debut feature, “Krisha,” which earned him multiple awards including the National Board of Review’s Best Directorial Debut, The Bingham Ray Breakthrough Director Award at the Gothams, both the Grand Jury Award and Audience Award at SXSW, and The Independent Spirit John Cassavetes Award. Shults also directed the 2019 drama “Waves,” featuring Kelvin Harrison Jr. and Taylor Russell.
Shults’ background in darker films aligns perfectly with The Weeknd’s noir-influenced pop style, a theme that runs consistently throughout his discography, such as his 2015 smash album “Beauty Behind the Madness“, followed by the critically acclaimed “Starboy” (2018) and his recent release “After Hours“, which produced the widely popular single “Blinding Lights.
On the cover of “After Hours”, The Weeknd is shown with a bloodied appearance and wrapped in bandages, indicating he fully immersed himself in character to promote the album. In contrast, his latest work, “Hurry Up Tomorrow”, has been enveloped in mystery, hinting that this could be the swan song for his alter-ego. The artist expressed, “A new journey lies ahead. Once today is over, I will uncover my true identity.
Tomorrow brings the arrival of the new album, scheduled for January 24, 2025, through XO/Republic Records. The tracks “Timeless,” a collaboration with Playboi Carti, and “São Paulo,” featuring Anitta, have confirmed appearances. Among those contributing to production on this album are Pharell Williams, Max Martin, Oscar Holter, Mike Dean, Ojivolta, Twisco, and Sean Solymar.
The album offers an intoxicating glimpse into the upcoming film, scheduled for release on May 16, perfect timing for the summer blockbuster season.
