Jennifer Lawrence- and Malala-Produced Apple Doc About Afghan Women ‘Bread & Roses’ Drops Trailer

As a seasoned gamer with a soft spot for powerful narratives and compelling characters, the trailers for “Bread & Roses” and “Zurawski v. Texas” have piqued my interest in ways that few films ever do. The experiences of these women, their struggles, and their resilience resonate deeply with me, as a gamer who has navigated countless virtual worlds and encountered numerous digital adversaries. Yet, the stakes in these documentaries are far higher than any in-game battle I’ve ever faced.

Apple Original Films has just dropped the trailer for Bread & Roses, a documentary feature — directed by Sahra Mani and produced by Jennifer Lawrence and Malala Yousafzai — about the plight of women in Afghanistan in the aftermath of the 2021 withdrawal from the country of the United States and fall of Kabul to the Taliban.

The movie, instigated by Lawrence and her partner Justine Ciarrocchi from Excellent Cadaver, recruited Afghan filmmaker Mani (known for “A Thousand Girls Like Me”) to direct, portrays a story about three brave Afghan women who stand up against attempts to take away the autonomy they had gained in modern times.

As a gamer, I’d rephrase it like this: “I, just like Malala Yousafzai – the renowned Pakistani Nobel Peace Prize laureate advocating for girls’ education – have lent my support to this project as an executive producer, amplifying its vital message. Joining me in this endeavor is the talented Iranian composer, Farhad Khosravi.

The film titled “Bread & Roses” made its debut for the first time at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival in 2023, receiving favorable critiques (it holds a perfect score of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes). This highly-acclaimed production will be available for streaming on Apple TV+ starting November 22.

Lawrence and Ciarrocchi are additionally involved as executive producers for another upcoming documentary in 2024, titled “Zurawski v. Texas“. This film is helmed by directors Maisie Crow and Abbie Perrault, and boasts high-profile executive producers such as Hillary Clinton and Chelsea Clinton. The movie portrays the heartrending consequences that the reversal of “Roe v. Wade” has already inflicted upon many women. It made its debut at the Telluride Film Festival and is slated to open in selected cinemas before the U.S. presidential election on November 5th.
