Jennifer Love Hewitt Addresses Possible Return to ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ Reboot

As a gamer who grew up in the ’90s and was captivated by the horror genre, I can hardly contain my excitement at the prospect of Jennifer Love Hewitt reprising her role in the “I Know What You Did Last Summer” reboot! The original film was a staple of my sleepovers with friends, and the suspense it created still lingers in my mind.

As a gaming enthusiast, I’m here to set the record straight about some buzz surrounding my potential comeback in the I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot.

The actress made an appearance on the “I’ve Never Said This Before With Tommy DiDario” podcast, which will be released next Tuesday. During the conversation with the host, she appeared to drop a hint about possibly reprising her character Julie James for the upcoming sequel, directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson.

Hewitt admitted in an exclusive clip from the episode (obtained by The Hollywood Reporter), ‘I might be getting ready for it,’ or ‘Preparations could be underway.’ He added, ‘I’m almost ready to share something thrilling.’

Later on, Hewitt delved deeper into the prospect of revisiting the franchise that catapulted her to stardom in the ’90s, having starred in the initial 1997 film. She expressed, “The main issue has been scheduling and ensuring I don’t become a relic of the past if I rejoin the franchise. I genuinely want to create something meaningful and cater to Julie James fans. I simply desire it to seem significant, as though her return signifies more than just a nostalgic trip.

It was hinted that Julie has been included in the reboot’s script, suggesting that her role is likely to be present, though it remains uncertain if she will be the actress playing the character.

Hewitt expressed deep gratitude for being considered for the role, despite it being 27 years since the initial movie’s release. She played Julie in “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” sharing the screen with Sarah Michelle Gellar, Freddie Prinze Jr., and Ryan Phillippe. She also appeared in the 1998 sequel titled “I Still Know What You Did Last Summer.” According to The Hollywood Reporter, discussions were underway for her to reprise her character in the upcoming remake.

A decade ago, I found myself in a chilling tale where my friends and I unwittingly took a life, concealed the crime, and swore an oath of silence about it. Fast-forward a year, and we’re hunted by a relentless figure, meting out retribution for our secret sins.

Later on, DiDario proposed creating a fresh tune for our upcoming flick, but Hewitt had a head start. “I’ve been tinkering with it as well,” she shared. “We’ll see how it turns out.” (As a gamer translating this to my gaming world, I might say: “DiDario suggested we make a new theme song for our next game launch, but Hewitt had an edge. ‘I’ve been designing the music,’ she said. ‘Let’s see what we come up with!'”)

Originally portraying his character in the ’98 follow-up and slated to appear again in the imminent remake, Prince has been confirmed. Earlier, Geller hinted at her involvement in the next installment informally. Additionally, DiDario posed the question to Hewitt whether discussions about Brandy Norwood, the renowned performer who joined the cast for the ’98 sequel, returning were underway as well.

Hewitt replied affirmatively and playfully mentioned needing to revisit the films to refresh her memory about the characters’ fates. Initially, she expressed her desire to have Jack Black involved, only to realize sadly that he had perished in the storyline. Indeed, Black was a part of ‘I Still Know What You Did Last Summer,’ but his character met an unfortunate end at the hands of the killer, impaled with a gardening tool.

In a previous segment of the podcast, there were whispers about a behind-the-scenes conflict between me and Sarah during the shooting of the 1997 film. These rumors suggested that I was altering the script to ensure my character ultimately ended up taking out hers.

When I was 18, my script notes weren’t valued by them,” the actress clarified. “We were all going through that shared experience, learning as we went along. I cheer for her and Freddie. Frankly, it’s incredibly sweet that they’ve been married for a century and have children. It’s just so endearing! So it’s been quite amusing to witness all of this unfold.

The I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot is currently set for a summer 2025 release.
