Jennifer Love Hewitt is sharing details for the first time about her intimate bond with her mother in her new book titled “Inheriting Magic“. She explains that the title reflects how she’s continued her mother Patricia Mae’s tradition of making those around her feel valued and cherished.
In a chat with 9-1-1 co-star Bryan Safi during an event for the upcoming book and Lifetime movie The Holiday Junkie at Zibby’s Bookshop in Los Angeles, Hewitt stated, “I would be on a highly popular TV show, yet when we entered a restaurant, people wouldn’t even notice me; that was my mother.” She was someone who radiated light and happiness. She could connect with anyone, as if there was no such thing as a stranger to her at all.
Hewitt recounted a tale about how her mother managed to transform ordinary days into enchanting ones at home. “On days when I felt down or had a broken heart, she would hang up Christmas lights as she thought it helped brighten the atmosphere,” she reminisced, chuckling at the memory. “Even during my worst menstrual days, there were always lights.
Back in 2012, on June 12th, I received the crushing news that hit me like a game-ending glitch. Patricia Mae, someone I admired from afar, had passed away at the age of 67 due to complications from cancer. It’s ironic, isn’t it? The media found out before she did.
Hewitt mentioned that while he was in Monaco for the 52nd Monte Carlo TV Festival, some parts of his book weren’t included – specifically, that the press had learned about his mother’s passing before he did. He found it strange because by the time he returned from a lengthy 10-and-a-half-hour flight, everyone already knew. It reminded him that people often seem to know details about his life, including personal matters like breakups, long before he does.
After twelve years, Hewitt feels prepared to discuss her mother’s memories and how she infuses magic into family life as a mom, through her upcoming book to be released on Dec 10. She shared with The Hollywood Reporter that until now, she hadn’t spoken much about her mother after her passing because she lacked the words. “I simply didn’t know what to say,” she admitted. “This felt like the appropriate moment to discuss her and convey, ‘This is her legacy.’
A portion of that experience will likewise be depicted on-screen within “The Holiday Junkie,” a film directed, executive produced, and starring Hewitt, with her husband Brian Hallisay. Their three children also make brief appearances in the movie, scheduled to debut on December 14th.
Hewitt shared that the movie’s narrative was meant to resonate with everyone, particularly those experiencing loss during the holiday season. He wanted to create a film that could bring joy to those who are happy, but also acknowledge and validate the feelings of sadness for those going through difficult times. Just like him, Hewitt finds Christmas challenging without his mother, but he believes it’s okay to feel this way and even have moments when the absence is more than just a fleeting thought. It’s these complex emotions that the movie aims to depict.
In the film’s production, where Kristin Chenoweth lent her voice as a notable guest star – having been a friend to Hewitt’s mother – a tribute was shared in remembrance of those we’ve sadly parted ways with during filming.
Hewitt mentioned that there was a board displaying photos of loved ones who had passed away, and each day, the movie was dedicated to them all. He didn’t want it to seem like just his personal experience, but wanted everyone else to feel included. It turned out wonderfully as the crew and others expressed that they felt they were honoring their own family members, whether it was their dad, grandma, or other loved ones. They seemed to believe that these departed souls were with them during this journey. When the project ended, everyone seemed to release something beautiful, implying a shared, meaningful experience.
Reminiscing about a cherished last memory, Hewitt spoke of a habit that had never failed: before she’d leave for a photo shoot, regardless if it was broad daylight or pitch black night, her mother would always request they hold hands together.
Hewitt shared, ‘I didn’t inquire about this until my late 20s, and I asked her, ‘What’s the significance of holding hands? What does it mean?’ Because I honestly didn’t understand. She responded, ‘I want you to carry my love and backing with you to work each day. I want you to sense it and realize that I’m always there with you.’ Now, I deeply miss this connection, and I wish I still had her hand.’
