Jeopardy Contestant Gets Candid About ‘Little’ Frustrations With Mayim Bialik On The Show Before She Was Let Go

Frequent viewers of Jeopardy!, much like myself, tend to set aside the turbulent hosting transition that followed the passing of the iconic Alex Trebek. Though the show has evolved under Ken Jennings’ tenure, the new host has managed to establish himself, navigating through a series of guest hosts and sharing co-hosting duties with Mayim Bialik before securing the permanent position. As some familiar faces return for tournament seasons on the 2025 TV lineup, one of Jeopardy!‘s top winners confessed one aspect about Bialik during her time that he found somewhat annoying.

Matt Amodio competed under seven different “Jeopardy!” hosts during his 38-game winning streak in 2021, including Mayim Bialik, and he openly expressed to Rolling Stone one reason he was happy that Ken Jennings became the permanent host. Amodio stated about Bialik:

“I was glad when Ken Jennings took over permanently because I found it easier to focus on the game with him as the host.

She was delightful and lively on stage, no doubt about it. She was pleasant and entertaining indeed. However, it’s evident that she isn’t as passionate about Jeopardy! as Ken is, and her expertise and enthusiasm didn’t quite match up. As a seasoned player myself, I can say it’s a bit disheartening when the host seems unaware of certain aspects of the game that even a casual viewer might notice.

As Ken Jennings and Mayim Bialik shared hosting duties on Jeopardy!, viewers didn’t hesitate to express their preferences. The discussion over who would secure the permanent role went on until the 2023 WGA strike, at which point Bialik decided to miss the last week of Jeopardy! tapings in support of the writers.

During the last week, Ken Jennings took over, and when fresh episodes restarted following the strikes, it became public knowledge that Mayim Bialik wouldn’t be coming back. Michael Davies, the executive producer, elaborated on how Jennings secured the position, sharing that he eventually earned the job.

The expression on the contestants’ faces when he stepped onto the stage was priceless, showcasing his mastery of the material. I recall an instance where someone incorrectly answered a question about Gainsborough, to which he swiftly replied, ‘Actually, it’s not Gainsborough but Gainsborough’s main competitor,’ naming another lesser-known artist. Such quick wit was unique, and only Ken Jennings could have pulled that off. Over time, our TV stations reported that Ken made significant strides as he had more chances to play. And Mayim, who rightfully chose not to break the picket line during the SAG-AFTRA strike, stepped aside. As Ken continued to gain experience, I believe he improved and ultimately secured the position.

Ken Jennings’ ability to provide additional facts and acknowledge when he’s puzzled by a hint is truly remarkable, and it’s hard to imagine any performer or athlete excelling in this area as much as him.

Jeopardy!’s Second Chance Tournament is currently being aired daily on syndication. To find out when it’s on in your area, make sure to check your local listings. Additionally, Ken Jennings hosts ‘Celebrity Jeopardy!’ every Wednesday at 9 p.m. on ABC. For those with an Amazon Prime subscription, you can also watch ‘Pop Culture Jeopardy!’, where host Colin Jost is doing exceptionally well, even when he doesn’t know all the answers.
