Jesse Eisenberg Says His Lex Luthor is to Blame for Zack Snyders’ Divisive DC Team Up

As a seasoned cinephile with decades of film-watching under my belt, I must say that Jesse Eisenberg‘s portrayal of Lex Luthor in “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” left me with mixed feelings. On one hand, I admire the actor for his versatility and the roles he has taken on throughout his career. However, when it comes to this superhero film, I can’t help but feel that the character fell a bit flat.

Jesse Eisenberg, known for movies such as The Social Network, Zombieland, and Now You See Me, stepped into the world of superheroes in 2016 with Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. In this film, Eisenberg portrays the villain Lex Luthor. However, today, the actor expresses dissatisfaction with his performance in the movie. Interestingly, he attributes the underperformance of the DCEU (DC Extended Universe) film to his own acting.

According to CinemaBlend, Eisenberg discussed on the Armchair Expert podcast his feelings towards the production of a movie he calls “this Batman film,” implying that he may not have particularly enjoyed being part of the superhero film.

In a Batman film, my performance didn’t sit well with audiences, and it appears that the movie itself wasn’t favorably received either. It’s an admission I haven’t made before, and it’s somewhat humbling to share, but I genuinely believe it had a tangible impact on my career. Since I don’t usually follow reviews or film news, I was unaware of the negative response until later. This was a very public project, and unlike other less successful works that don’t get much attention, this one was widely seen.

Despite being a significant box office success for Warner Bros, the movie received mixed reviews from critics. Today, it has a score of 29% on Rotten Tomatoes and continues to spark debate within the DC Extended Universe. Interestingly, an extended version called “Ultimate Edition” was launched on home media platforms around the same time, which was generally considered an improvement over the original theater release.

‘Batman v Superman’ is a Solid Superhero Film with a Weak-ish Villain

Despite being Ultimate Edition or not, Jesse Eisenberg’s portrayal of Lex Luthor in “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” appears to be a significant miscalculation within the movie. The main problem lies in that the character fails to truly pose a substantial threat to anyone. Instead, it was the conflict among the title characters that kept the danger level escalating, and even then, the conclusion featured one of the most questionable “cheat code” endings due to a touch of bonding over Martha. Regardless, Eisenberg continues to reflect on the film and admits to playing a role in its flaws.

I really enjoyed my part in the film and the entire experience, yet I can’t help but feel responsible for any shortcomings. It’s not that I think others wronged me, rather, I believe I may have made some mistakes myself… It was disheartening, and to be honest, I often feel this way about missed opportunities, just accepting that perhaps things didn’t go as well as they could have due to my own limitations.
